The phenomenon of
Doppler effect (or a Doppler pitch shift) occurs when a
moving sound source approaches and recedes from a
listener. When the speed is constant, the effect is a higher pitch when the source approaches (and compresses the waves to shorter wavelengths in front of it), and similarly, a lower pitch when it recedes and expands those wavefronts. Some listeners may think that the pitch is ascending, but it's not, it's merely getting louder. However, if the sound source is accelerating towards the listener, then the pitch will be constantly rising. |
