REEL 17 COMMENTARY

1. Uninteresting take, zero content.

2. Recorded from 100 yards, two blasts only. It is a very quiet horn, without "grunt".

3. At beginning recorded from inside foghorn house. First two blasts just one long high-pitched sound: puny and ridiculous compared to Ft. Amhurst horn. Recordists move outside, now (2'05") horn blast has a "grunt" at end. Note long reverberation and echo. Note also the obviously electronic nature of its attack. Ridiculous sound! Blasts once every minute. Very quiet ambience, no water sounds, occasional wind on microphone.

4. Talk about electronic horns and their recent installation. During take recordists and lighthouse keeper move through foghorn building. 60 cycle hum and clock ticking behind talk (2'10"). Good talk.

7. Foghorn at a distance, second time partly covered up by car passing. Car horn (1'05"- 1'45").

8. Foghorn more or less audible above rumble from city and traffic. Sounds different every time. Car horn (1'30"; 1'46"; 1'55" ; 1'58"; 2'35"; 3'45"; 5'25"; 7'05"). Rain begins (2'45") but often masked by cars. Note horn blast (3'50") suddenly very loud and clear. Music from a radio (4'30"). Whistling (7'20"; 7'35"). Very active and lively take.

9. Kids playing in foreground. General city rumble. Car horn (1'30"; 2'30"). Bell (1'55"-3'20"), kids keep on yelling and playing during ring, some cars passing. Kids laughing at end of ring, fooling around, having lots of fun. Bell rings again (4'25"-4'55"), a slow ring and then 3 bells (5'15"-7'35"). Very clangy attacks. Bells manage to drown out most of the kids' sounds, but not the city rumble. Ring ends with one bell ringing alone for about 30".
