REEL 23 COMMENTARY

1. Begins outside with a lot of microphone disturbances. Transition into cafe works (1'15"). Juke box playing, people and kids talking. Loud and restless ambience. Occasional cash register ringing, constant door squeaking and banging. Between songs (5'45"-5'55") note fan noise pervading whole space. Foreground conversation between recordists and waitress (9'10"). Hardly audible, masked by general ambience. Juke box is going throughout whole take. What a dinner atmosphere!

2. Recordists approaching from outside, entering as congregation is singing. Good transition. Drums distorted, level change (1'50"). Singing very enthusiastic, accompanied by tambourine, and accordion. Song goes on until 5'50". While man speaks (preacher!) accordion keeps going. Next song (6'10") accompanied also by clapping.

3. End of preceding song, short speaking, lively ambience. Next song (0'40").

4. Short speaking, another song (0'30"), accompanied with harmonium. Level change (2'20"). Preacher talks with a lot of pathos. Very restless atmosphere, words hard to understand. Ever so often people saying "Amen", "Hallelujah". Another song (4'30"), same as in B2. Lots of drumming this time, general build up toward end. More prayer after (7'00"). Congregation leaving (9'10"), somebody talking to recordists, money clanking in foreground.
