REEL 74 COMMENTARY

1. Recorded from outside changehouse shelter, therefore slight difference in quality from last take on reel 73.

2. Bad wind on microphones at beginning. Recorded from water's edge. Waterfalls audible in distance. Light transparent quality of the closely swirling water, gets dense at low end of the spectrum from rumble of distant falls. Change of position (2'25") because of wind.

3. Same, slight wind distortion at 1'00".

4. Waterfall is recorded from a distance, but can be turned up full blast to get full acoustic force. It is like sitting beside it and having heavy acoustic illusions (and getting hearing damage!).

5/6. Very late in a small town and no place to stay. The first person, fairly drunk, fights for mental clarity -- a beautiful set of directions for this reason. A light snow was falling and this guy and the following person were both trudging around town looking for a place to sleep, like recordists. Car motor is turned off both times, note how quiet the ambience is.

7. Asking a couple first who are strangers in town and then a lady who gives confused directions. Car motor on throughout.

8. Talking to man, car motor on.

9. Starts out with some organ music and continues with adds, rock, pop, country western, etc. Some longish gaps on dial, between stations.

10. Fairly dense traffic, some voices and footsteps are audible though.
