REEL 112 COMMENTARY

1. Wind distortion, useless take.

0'55" horns blow.

2. Low frequency putt-putt motor, good idling. Boat moving in closer.

3-7. These takes were recorded on a small converted fishing boat, as it was tied up to an old barge. Recordists were taking a harbour tour visiting different wharfs.

3. Seaplane in the distance? Not clear.

4. Same, walking inside at 0'15".

5. Change in ambience, seaplane taking off, note the heavy low frequencies, slurp of water in foreground.

*6. Seaplane overhead, grating sound, slurp of water and squeak of mooring, great.

7. Some conversation, water and squeak of mooring.

8-11. Listening to two tugboats pulling a freighter out of moorage, noisy and mostly broadband sound. Recordist's conversation with crew person in the background.

9. 0'50" tugboat radio voice.

3'18" tugboat radio voice.

10. 0'28" tugboat radio voice. Note how radio communication has replaced the code of whistle patterns once used in this kind of operation.

12. Unloading fishboat by Fisherman's Wharf (McCallum Sales). Unloader is loud broadband and has a high frequency hum in it. The unloading is done with a high powered suction/blowing mechanism.

2'15" unloader stops.

2'30" unloader starts again.

3'25" unloader stops.

13. Large freighter being loaded with grain from the Alberta Wheat Pool elevators. Loading process is the same as in previous take. Acoustically not that interesting.

14. A man sawing up an old beached log.

1'00" machine stops.

15. Same as 14.

3'05" machine idling.

3'15" growls into wood again.

4'10" it stops, birds, children, distant motor on water now audible.

16. Chainsaw again, closer up, very short take.
