REEL 50 COMMENTARY

1. Seagulls, small waves, lots of clunking and wind on microphones at beginning of take.

0'20" distant train whistle.

2. Soundwalk through trees by the sea. For all the clomping of the recordist's footsteps, a nice sequence unfolds here as recordist moves about a treed promontory of rock facing the ocean, from dry to wet ambience, back and forth. Starts with distant train whistle, distant dog and lots of wind on microphones.

*1'15" train whistle, a bit closer.

3'15" distant surf, lovely breathing rhythm.

*7'10" waves appear, small boat in background, recorded from cliff edge, facing sea.

8'40" moving on to pebble beach.

10'30" pebble beach playing with stones (some distortion).

*11'20" move up to water's edge, even the bubbles of these small wave ripples are audible!

12'30" moving on.

3. Interview for onomatopoeic sounds of Norwegian. These people were friends of one of the recordists. Lots of laughing throughout. Begins with conversation about Nagra and microphone problems.

2'45" "Ba-a-a".

4'00" dog, cat, cow, rooster, chicken, sheep, pig, crow, duck, geese, goat, mouse.

6'00" little burp from girl.

7'00" bear.

4/5. more sounds.

6. A large group of frogs, a few hundred feet away, recorded by the side of the road facing the marsh, with the occasional car or truck zooming by at high speed. Dense texture of frogs, some individually perceivable, others blend into the group sound. The combined process makes a beautiful rhythmic, as well as timbral texture.

4'30" car horn.

6'00" very distant dog (?).
