REEL 70 COMMENTARY

1. Asking men where the good sounds are, laughing about the question. A whistle sound in middle of talk.

2. Trying to record booming activity: men scampering over logs with long poles, sorting the wood. Without success. Only voices audible.

3. On a River Road farm. Opens with various recordist's noises and bad wind. Train whistle behind wind noises. Request to record.

0'30" cement mixer and good shoveling sounds.

4. Tugboat pulling barge.

0'30" blows three long blasts to signal approach to the swing-bridge operator downstream. Very clear horn with long reverb. Followed by motor noise of another boat coming upstream.

5. Tugboat passing beneath the swing-bridge. Slow crescendo and decrescendo of this raspy motor sound. Produces some interesting chords.

6. Wood chips dropping from conveyor to pile, recorded at a distance of 75 feet or so, as a result mostly mechanical sound audible only.

7. Close to the edge of the river by a sandy bank under a pier, a jet flying overhead. Quick wave-like rhythm to the water breaking on the sand.

2'45" motorboat bounces by on rough water, followed by waves it produced. Wind noises throughout.

8. South slope area, footsteps of a jogger, followed by a horse.

9. South slope area, some shuffling and rustling from recordist. Traffic in background.

10. Waterfall at north end of garden. White noise spectrum.

0'50" close-up water gurgle.

1'50" move on along path.

3'00" more running water -- pump appears to right.

*4'00" close-up on pump -- this is the power source for the fountains, obviously poorly insulated.

11. Walking along the path, voice of a child.

12. Running stream. Listen to the tune in the water.
