Traffic notices

Watch for equipment and construction crews at the areas listed below and always obey signs, traffic controls, and traffic control personnel. Please remember that the speed limit in construction zones is 30km/h.

UPDATE - NOTICE (9-Aug-2022)

Paving of Nelson Way, originally scheduled for August 12-13, has now been pushed up to be completed on Wednesday, August 10th. As a result, the following is noted:

- South Parking lot will be open and accessible via Nelson Way and Greenhouse Lane.

- Greenhouse Lane will be accessible via Nelson Way.

- Discovery 1 parkade levels P1 & P2 will be closed with permit holders and visitors requested to park in the South Parking lot for the day.

- Discovery 2 outdoor parking lot P4 will be closed with permit holders requested to park in the South Parking lot for the day.

* If vehicles are parked in P1 or P2 on August 10th, a 1 to 2 hour delay in exiting can be expected. As previously noted, motorists are requested to park in the South Parking lot to avoid delays in departing the Discovery area.

UPDATE (2-Aug-2022)

Milling activity can be expected during the week of August 8th. This will involve an increase of dump trucks and large equipment working along University Drive East.

Paving activity along University Drive East from Gaglardi Way through to the University High Street roundabout can be expected during the week of August 15th. This will result in one direction between outbound (departing SFU & UniverCity) and inbound (arrival to SFU & UniverCity) traffic flow as paving activity progresses. During these interruptions, traffic will be detoured via Gaglardi Way and Tower Road to use South Campus Road. An alternate route via University Drive West will also be available when arriving and departing SFU & UniverCity.

Watch for changes in traffic patterns along University Drive East and detour routes during the above periods. Motorists continue to be reminded that the speed limit in construction zones is 30km/h. This includes the entire length of University Drive East between Gaglardi Way and Tower Road. Please slow down and ensure adequate distance between your vehicle and crew/equipment working along the road.

Apr 18th - Sep (2022) University Drive East & Nelson Way Temporary Roadway Interruptions

UPDATE 14 July 2022

Beginning this week, cyclists are being detoured to and from campus via Gaglardi Way due to increased roadway reconstruction activity on University Drive East. Signs have been posted to aid cyclists with detour routing.

There will be paving activity on Nelson Way on July 15th. Watch for increased trucks and paving activity in the area. Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist motorists through the area. A two-way traffic pattern will be in place for access to/from Greenhouse Lane, South Parking, etc. The P4 parking lot to the north of Discovery 2 will be closed on July 15th. Traffic delays may be expected. 

There will be paving activity on University Drive East on July 16th. Traffic pattern changes and delays can be expected. 

The southbound traffic lane of Gaglardi Way, between Burnaby Mountain Parkway and the roundabout, will be closed on July 15th & 16th to stage asphalt delivery vehicles. Watch for traffic control personnel along this section of road. 

UPDATE 11 May 2022

Work along University Drive East has begun and work on Nelson Way is expected to begin 12 May 2022.

The sidewalk along the north side of University Drive East between Tower Road and Nelson Way has temporarily been closed as part of this project with westbound pedestrians being detoured to use the west side sidewalk of lower Tower Road. This section of sidewalk closure will be ongoing until work along the roadside progresses.

The P4 parking lot located north of the Discovery 2 Building will be closed during construction activity along Nelson Way. This interruption can be expected for an approximate 3-4 week period beginning Monday, May 16th.

Where:

1. University Drive East between Gaglardi Way and University High Street

2. Nelson Way between University Drive East and Greenhouse Lane

Work to be completed:

Paving and upgrade work on University Drive East and Nelson Way

- Road surface paving

- Installation of street lighting

- Sidewalk widening  

Expected Interruptions:

1. The section of University Drive East between Gaglardi Way and Tower Road will be subject to traffic pattern changes, lessened to one lane in each direction with potential for alternating single lane traffic during the work day.

2. Delays and detours can be expected along University Drive East and Nelson Way.

2. Nelson Way, located between University Drive East and Greenhouse Lane, will be subject to lane closures, temporary traffic pattern changes and single lane alternating traffic.

3. Access to and from south parking lots and the south parkade will be subject to temporary access interruptions and potential temporary closures.

4. Sidewalks and trail access routes along University Drive East and Nelson Way will be subject to temporary closures.

5. Cyclists and pedestrians will be subject to detoured routing. 

COMMENT:

1. Be prepared for delays if your normal travel route includes University Drive East, Nelson Way and connecting roads. Consider using alternate routing during the project period.

2. Allow for extra travel time.

3. Changes and progress updates will be posted during the project period. Check back for updates.

4. Transit bus routing and schedules are not expected to be affected by this project.

5. Emergency response access routing to all areas of campus and UniverCity will be available throughout the project period.

April 4th - July 8th Tower Road & University Crescent (South) Temporary Roadway Interruption

UPDATE 11 May 2022

Realm work has begun and a northbound traffic lane shift has been implemented. The lower south section sidewalk of Tower Road on the east side of the road has been closed as part of this interruption with pedestrians being detoured to use the sidewalk on the west side of Tower Road. These interruptions are anticipated to be in place for about 8 weeks.

UPDATE 5 May 2022

The start of this work and the lane closures have been delayed.

April 4th - May 28th (2022)

Where:

The southern section of Tower Road between University Drive East and University Crecent (south).

Work to be completed: 

Parcel 33 (UniverCity Development project) realm work will be completed. 

Expected Interruption:

1. The northbound traffic lane will be shifted towards the center of the road resulting in the left turn lane becoming a multi-use through lane and left turn lane.

2. The southbound left turn lane from Tower Road to University Crescent (south) will be closed. Left turns will not be permitted.

3. A section of University Crescent (south) from Tower Road eastward will be closed. Right turns into the UniverCity neighbourhood will not be permitted from Tower Road during this interruption. Westbound traffic (only) will be permitted at the west end of University Crescent (south). Two-way traffic will be available off University High Street.

4. Sidewalks in the area will be closed with detour signs posted.

Jun 27 - Aug 31 West Parkade North Lane Temporary Closure for DES Installation

UPDATE (29 June 2022)

Due to another project involving paving activity on University Drive West and University Drive East, in the vicinity of the West Mall Centre and Library, the temporary relocation of bus service from bay 1 at the Transportation Centre (TC) to University Drive West has now been delayed to July 11th. Watch for posted notification at the TC bus stop.

When:

June 27th through August 31st (2022)

Where:

West Parkade north access lane off University Drive West

Work to be completed: 

District Energy System pipes for the new residence building under construction will be installed. This will involve trenching along the lane between the West Parkade and University Drive West.

Expected Interruption:

1. The traffic lanes between the north side of the West Parkade and University Drive West will be closed and restricted to construction equipment, vehicles and personnel.

2. Pedestrians will be detoured around the work site.

3. For the period July 4th through August 31st, the transit bus stop (bay 1) on the west side of the Transportation Centre will be temporarily relocated around the corner to University Drive West.

Comment:

During the temporary closure of the the West Parkade north access lane, motorists will be detoured to enter and exit the parkade via Gaglardi Way.          Watch for temporary detour directional signage along University Drive West and Gaglardi Way.

Dec 2020 - October 2022 University Drive West and Parkade Temporary Roadway Interruptions

When:

December 2020 - October 2022

Where:

1. The section of University Drive West between Gaglardi Way (north end) and West Campus Road.

2. The north access road to and from the West Parkade.

3. Visitor North (VN) parking lot.

Work to be completed: 

Construction of SFU Residences, Phase 2.

Expected Interruption:

1. Traffic delays can be expected along Univesity Drive West when construction vehicles are entering and exiting the construction site.

2. Alternating single lane traffic control can be expected along University Drive West.

3. The West Parkade access road will be lessened to two lanes (1 lane IN and 1 lane OUT).

4. A crosswalk at the intersection of University Drive West and West Parkade access lane will be temproarily removed for the construction period to accommodate construction activities.

5. The elevated sidewalk on the west side of the West Parkade access lane will be removed and reconfigured as part of the project.

6. A section of the VN parking lot has been blocked off and will be used as a construction staging area. Public parking in the fenced area will not be available during the project period.

Comment:

1. Transit bus routing and scheduling is not expected to be affected by this project.

2. A temporary (separated) pedestrian path will be set up along the east side of the West Parkade access lane to maintain pedestrian routing between the parkade and the sidewalk north of the West Mall Centre. Pedestrians are asked to cross University Drive West at marked crosswalks.

3. During the work day, traffic control personnel will be on site to assist cyclists and pedestrians with detour routing.
