Education Building Review

This website was created to provide  members of the SFU community with current information on the status of work done to date and information we have received from consultants on the project, such as information on mould and indoor air quality. The website also includes details on how to contact Safety & Risk Services and Facilities Services if you have questions or would like to report concerns.

Since February 2013, a great deal of work has been done in the Education building to address issues relative to the impact of water ingress on the building envelope and infrastructure, the functionality of the building, and related health and safety concerns, including indoor air quality and mould.

Since February 2013, a great deal of work has been done in the Education building to address issues relative to the impact of water ingress on the building envelope and infrastructure, the functionality of the building, and related health and safety concerns, including indoor air quality and mould.

When we first became aware of these structural challenges, and related air quality issues, we immediately developed a comprehensive response plan. We follow WorkSafe BC guidelines as well as industry best practices to ensure health and safety of all building occupants is our primary consideration.

At the beginning of the process we formed a working group, including building occupants, to assist Safety & Risk Services and Facilities Services staff in framing a comprehensive response process. Building occupants were surveyed via interviews and questionnaires – first in the Faculty of Education, and then as we expanded our focus, other administrative and academic departments.  We began by conducting an assessment of the entire building envelope; this was followed by additional assessments. An ongoing response plan has been put in place to ensure identified issues are responded to in a timely manner.

In some areas we have relocated faculty, staff and classroom instruction to allow for comprehensive testing and assessments. In the Graduate Programs wing we relocated everyone to allow us to determine all possible sources of moisture ingress and to find ways to best seal the building.  We have undertaken a number of remediation and construction projects in the building, including the gymnasium, washrooms, and classrooms.

We have engaged several consultants whose work has guided our process. These consultants have examined the overall structure, the seismic condition, the mechanical and ventilation systems and indoor air quality. We have also engaged an architect to look at building design and functionality. We have received a number of reports (available on this website), and will post updated reports on this site as they are received. It is important to note that these technical reports are used to inform our overall response to the building and none of them is a definitive report on the building.

We will continue to work on this issue until all aspects of the functionality of the building have been fully addressed.

Thanks,
