Chemical Waste

*NEW* The Laboratory Waste Handling Poster is now available. It offers a quick visual guide to sorting, handling and disposing of laboratory waste streams.

Hazardous Chemical Waste

Refer to the Hazardous Chemical Waste manual for information about the relevant legislative requirements, responsibilities of researchers, staff and students and key practices for safe management of SFU hazardous chemical waste streams.

How to submit a request for hazardous waste pickup

The online request system for laboratory hazardous waste pickup is managed by EHRS. The system will prompt users to enter key information about the waste and about their location. Users can request a single or a recurring (weekly) pickup. EHRS can then arrange for SFU's qualified Hazardous Waste Contractor to conduct safe handling, removal and disposal.

Hazardous waste containers must be appropriately labelled (see Guideline for Hazardous Waste Labelling).  Labels are available through Science Stores and EHRS.

Solvent waste is stored in 5L translucent (white) Baritainers, segregated and labeled as either halogenated or non-halogenated. These containers are available at Science Stores.

For information about disposal, see the Hazardous Waste Disposal procedures.

Hazardous waste collection is scheduled at Burnaby campus every Tuesday and Friday between 10:00am and noon. Surrey campus collection is every Thursday between 10:00am and noon and Vancouver campus pickups are scheduled as needed. In order to have a timely pickup, ensure that a contact person is available on the requested pickup day and time. Please DO NOT bring chemicals to Science Stores.
