The Four Steps to Safety Management
The EHRS Management System assigns responsibility to line management for compliance with university and legislative requirements.
- To assist departments with implementation of the Safety Management System, EHRS has developed a Departmental Safety Program Outline that can be customized to the needs of individual departments.
Authority and Accountability for Safety
Executive Management SFU's Board of Governors (the board) establishes the university's commitment to safety and delegates authority and accountability for safety to line management through the President and Vice Presidents.
Departments and Units are responsible for developing and implementing their departmental safety program and delegating accountability for safety to supervisors.
Supervisors must identify, assess and mitigate safety risks, and address safety recommendations and concerns. Under section 117 of the Workers Compensation Act, supervisors have specific responsibilities including:
- Providing training and orientation to new and young workers
- Instructing workers in safe work procedures
- Training workers in their assigned tasks, checking work is being done safely, and taking appropriate corrective action
- Ensuring that only authorized and properly trained workers operate tools and machinery, use hazardous chemicals, enter confined spaces etc.
- Ensuring that equipment and materials are properly handled, stored, and maintained.
WorkSafeBC offers a free online course entitled Supervising for Safety which aims to assist supervisors in meeting their workplace safety obligations and becoming a more effective supervisor.
Faculty, Staff, Students, and Contractors are required to participate in safety orientation, follow safe-work procedures, and report hazards and incidents.
