Fire Safety Week

Try Out the Electronic Fire Simulator Oct 3rd

On Monday, October 3rd, 2016, as a promotion of National Fire Safety Week, Burnaby Fire Department will be at SFU BBY in Saywell Atrium from 10am to 2pm to discuss Fire Safety. They will also be offering Fire Extinguisher training on their electronic simulator system.

All persons on campus are encouraged to attend, learn important Fire Safety tips from the Fire Fighters themselves, and to try their hand at putting out the (electronic) fire!

What is Fire Safety Week?

According to Fire Prevention Canada: Canadians must be made aware of the simple measures that can be taken to prevent a devastating fire from occurring in their homes.  It’s about life safety first and foremost and Fire Prevention Canada is committed to helping with this endeavour. Together we can save lives.

Fire Safety Week is inspired by The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which lasted two days – October 8th and 9th – and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and burned more than 2,000 acres. That fire forever changed the way that public officials viewed fire safety. To mark the 40th anniversary of this tragic event, the Fire Marshals Association of North America deemed that the most appropriate commemoration was to do everything they could to educate and inform the public about the importance of fire safety and prevention. Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed every Sunday through to the Saturday that October 8th falls on.
