Ransomware defence

Most anyone can be a victim of cyber attacks. Guard yourself.

  • Keep your operating system and any antivirus software up to date, and check for updates when you hear of a new threat.
  • Never open email attachments without checking that (1) you know the person sending it, and (2) you’re expecting this attachment or link (since sender’s ID can be spoofed). If you’re in Connect and you read a suspicious email, click the “Report Phishing” button and the email will get tagged and moved to your Junk box for IT to look at.
  • If you’re sent a link and there’s any doubt about it, mouseover the link to see if it’s really going where you expect it to: it’s easy to spoof a URL except for that final mouseover.
  • Use critical thinking before clicking on links: it may say “7 ways to scam your TA” but it may take you instead to a site that ends up stealing your logins and passwords.
  • Never ever ever plug a stray USB stick or drive or disc into your computer to see what it has on it. Curiosity can infect or kill computers.
  • Regularly backup your files to an external hard drive that is then disconnected from your computer (so that any infection stops before hitting your backup as well).
  • If your PC does get infected, don’t pay the ransom because there's no guarantee that your files will be restored.
  • (from SFU and Huffington Post).
