Interested in getting involved with the campus community? SFU's Senate has a number of committees requiring student participation. Committee work ranges from approving undergraduate and graduate curriculum; determining university academic priorities; developing policy on awards, scholarships and bursaries; and setting policy for the Calendar. Please submit your nomination via WebSurvey by May 31.

June U-Pass BC

The June U-Pass BC is available on the U-Pass BC website. The July U-Pass BC will be available as of June 16.

Free movie nights

Student Services and the SFSS co-present free movie night in Images Theatre bi-weekly on Thursdays at 6:00pm. Doors open at 5:45pm. The next movie is on June 6: vote which movie to show next on the Facebook Discussion poll or on Instagram. Come for free popcorn and the movie, bring a friend or your family.

Skoden Indigenous Film Festival Saturday June 1

Skoden is a one day film festival featuring the works of BC based Indigenous filmmakers and talent. Started by two SFU Film students at the School for Contemporary Arts, Carr Sappier (Wolastoqiyik) and Grace Mathisen, the festival was created to showcase Indigenous filmmakers and to Indigenize the SFU community. Festival-goers will be able to attend two short film programs and special events, celebrating Indigenous voices and cultivating more active discussions about reconciliation. Held within the heart of Musqueam, Sḵwxwú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh territories, at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, the Skoden Indigenous Film Festival will feature indigenous cultural traditions including a welcome ceremony and witness. We welcome new traditions and invite anyone who is interested in making our community more inclusive to come, learn, and share with us in the spirit of Skoden. Tickets.

Exchange Buddy Program 

Apply now for the Exchange Buddy Program (formerly known as the GPS Buddy Program) to develop global friendships and help support new exchange or study abroad students from one of SFU’s partner universities and their transition to SFU this fall. Application deadline: June 30.

There are over 22 multi-use trails surrounding the Burnaby campus that are free for all SFU students, faculty, staff and community to use. See the trail map.

Fire prevention on campus

A combination of sparks and dry weather leads to bark mulch and grass fires or worse. If you do smoke, please ensure that your cigarettes are extinguished and disposed of properly in a designated ash tray or ash urn, and be cautious with anything that might cause a fire. Maps and information.

SFU Parking & Sustainable Mobility is excited to announce the launch of their free interim Campus Community Shuttle to provide service between select locations on the Burnaby campus to offset rerouted transit service due to construction. Stops are located at the Residence Dining Hall, UniverCity High Street East/Westbound and Discovery FIC. Available every 30 minutes weekdays from 8:00am to 10:30pm. Kids’ camps

• Science AL!VE is run by undergraduate university students who are passionate about teaching science. We provide weekend and week-long programs from May - August for students aged 5 - 14. Students will explore STEM topics ranging from computer science and engineering to anatomy and the environment.

Stadium construction

SFU Stadium construction is now underway and scheduled to be completed in summer 2020. During construction the Fitness Centre, Pool, Gyms, and Track & Fields will remain open regular hours. The primary exit from the LDC to Terry Fox Field is from the West Gym. Follow the Stadium project on Twitter and Instagram @SFUStadium for updates. 

Updates on Burnaby campus road closures and construction

Traffic updates are online as are campus construction updates.
Construction on the Burnaby Mountain District Energy Utility Project is progressing and Tower Road will re-open to two-way traffic by Tuesday March 26. As part of the next phase of work, there will be road closures affecting South Campus Road between April and August 2019. Construction flaggers and signage will be in place to help vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians navigate the closures.

Bennett Library at the Burnaby campus will be open 24 hours every day from March 25 to midnight Wednesday April 24 to support students writing papers and completing assignments, as well as studying for exams.

Library hours

Bennett Library at the Burnaby campus will be open 24 hours every day starting at 8:00am Monday March 25 to midnight Wednesday April 24 to support students writing papers and completing assignments, as well as studying for exams.

Intersession courses in the Business of Design

There are a few spots left in the summer intersession courses in the Business of Design program - IAT 430 and BUS 476. These advanced intersession courses immerse students in the development and launch of at least one sustainable product offering and business model. Students will develop production, operation, communication and marketing plans, and deliver products to real customers. Through this experience, students will develop a real understanding of the costs involved in launching and running a business, enabling them to write realistic business plans. This business plan will be prepared for submission to an accelerator, incubator or funder. Students will launch and sell their product or service at local maker fairs on a weekend in June. A virtual reality showcase

Semester in Alternate Realities has its final student virtual reality showcase on April 4, 12:00-5:30pm, SFU Surrey Mezzanine. Using their skills to create VR "for good," 18 students from different SFU departments will present their final virtual reality projects. Four new dance works

SCA Repertory Dancers in Concert on March 27-30, 8:00pm at Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. Join us for a presentation of four new dance works by SCA graduates Desirée Dunbar, Vanessa Goodman, Bevin Poole, and faculty member Judith Garay, that reflect on, react to, and renew over a decade of shared dance experiences. Students can attend the spring dance mainstage show for just $7.

On Friday March 8 SFU students will be supporting cancer research with a Relay for Life from 4:30 - 9:30pm in the West Gym. Doors open at 4:00pm. Relay for Life is a non-competitive relay in which one or more participant(s) of each team walks along the track at all times to signify the ongoing battle with cancer and our unconditional support. While you're off the track, there will be a ton of competitive team games/activities (some are minute-to-win-it styled) and lots of food, small activities, puppy therapy, raffle draws and much more to keep you engaged.

Cyberbullying: Extent, Impacts, and Solutions

Please join us for the first SFU President's Faculty Lecture of 2019 where Dr. Wanda Cassidy will discuss the results of research conducted among adolescents at BC schools and among students and faculty at Canadian universities. A focus of her presentation will be on understanding the impacts of cyberbullying across ages, as well as on solutions that are proving effective in addressing this challenging problem. Climate Future Series - The IMPACTS of 1.5 Degrees

This climate lecture series explores the science, impacts and solutions associated with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels through talks and discussions. The February 28 session looks at how we may achieve the 1.5 goal and what global, regional and local actions are required, considering implications for poverty eradication and sustainable development. Soundtrack of the Revolution: The Politics of Music in Iran

Dr. Nahid Siamdoust is the inaugural Ehsan Yarshater Fellow at Yale University’s Program in Iranian Studies at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. She is a cultural historian whose work concentrates primarily on the intersection between politics and various modes of cultural production and media forms in Iran and the wider Middle East. Road closures February - August

Temporary pedestrian and roadway interruptions/closures can be expected along Tower Road and South Campus Road on Burnaby campus for construction of the new biomass heating facility, expected to reduce GHG emissions by 80%.

Semester in Dialogue: Summer 2019

Apply by February 8 for Summer term's Semester in Housing Futures, a full-time, 10 credit program (DIAL 390W & 391W). The goals of the class are largely about uncovering new ways of talking and thinking about difficult, divisive issues, productively learning from each other, and engaging in dialogue through difference. 

Pathfinder SIAT Workshops: Logo Design

This workshop is taught by an industry professional and covers introductory techniques to Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom. Suitable for all students regardless of experience. The $10 registration fee will be refunded when you attend the workshop. Saturday, February 9, 10:30am - 1:30pm, SFU Surrey. Register online.

Nominate for controversy prize

Whether a student, a staff member, an academic at SFU, or a member of the community who has a connection to the University, the recipient of the Sterling Prize is selected for decidedly unconventional and distinctly untraditional work that provokes a wide audience. The recipient receives a cash award of $5,000 and makes a public presentation at the Centre for Dialogue. Deadline for nominations is February 15.

Calling entrepreneurs

Venture Connection is now officially accepting applications for this year’s Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize competition. SFU entrepreneurs are invited to showcase their ventures in a Dragon’s Den-styled pitch-off to win over $75K in cash and in-kind prizes. This competition is open to SFU students, staff, faculty, and recent alumni – and ventures of any stage are encouraged to participate. Deadline is February 24 at 11:59pm.

Undergraduate research symposium

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) series: Two-Spirit Reconciliation: Honouring the Truth; Reconciling for the Future. Many cultural traditions and practices of the peoples of Turtle Island have often been misrepresented or suppressed. This especially holds true for Indigenous notions and practices of gender, gender-roles, gender expression, sex and sexuality. Biomass Plant Project construction

Burnaby campus road closures for construction of the Biomass Plant Project will begin February 4 and temporary pedestrian and roadway interruptions/closures can be expected along Tower Road and South Campus Road. This will include vehicle and bus service route detours. Construction is expected to complete in August 2019.

MITACS offers $6000 to do research at another university

Senior undergradates as well as graduate students are encouraged to apply for a grant from MITACS to do research with a faculty member at another university for 12 - 24 weeks. • Breaking Ground: Indigenous Media and Cultural Institutions in Canada after 1990, is the next lecture in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology's Spring Colloquia series. Monday January 28 1:00 - 2:30pm in AQ 3154. Dr. Karrmen Crey is Sto:lo and a member of the Cheam Band. Her research examines the rise of Indigenous media in Canada, and the institutions of media culture that Indigenous media practitioners have historically engaged and navigated to produce their work. Her current research examines Indigenous film festivals and Indigenous digital media, particularly Indigenous virtual reality and augmented reality.

Tuition is due January 16

Avoid lineups and save time by paying your tuition fees with your financial institution via internet/telephone banking no later than 11:59pm Wednesday January 16. January U-Pass BC available

The January U-Pass BC is currently available on the U-Pass BC website. February’s will be available January 16. The 2019 Spring U-Pass BC exemption application is available online and the submission deadline is Wednesday January 9 at 4:30pm. Note: the U-Pass BC term fee will not be assessed to your student financial account until the next business day after you enroll in courses.

FASScinating breadth courses

From Narratives of Encounter and Survival (ENGL 111) to Heroic Greek Tales (HS 209) to First Nations Ethnozoology (FNST 222), FASS offers courses that will satisfy breadth and writing requirements for all SFU students. See the full list of FASS courses with spaces and no (or low) prerequisites.

Club Days is the most popular SFSS event on campus: there’s a hobby and student union for everyone – find one that suits your interests! Burnaby campus Clubs Days are January 15 - 18 in the North AQ, South AQ, Saywell Hall, and Blusson Hall from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Please note that on Friday, January 18, Clubs Days will be only in the North AQ. Surrey campus Clubs Day are January 22 - 23 at Surrey Mezzanine from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Different clubs each day.

Bursary application deadline - all students

The Bursary application for Spring is currently open for all new and current students undergraduate and graduate, both domestic and international. The deadline to apply online and submit your completed application is Friday, January 11. To apply, please log in to goSFU:  click Self-service, Student Centre, Apply for Bursaries/Work-Study. 

Please note that students will not be assessed for Work-Study during this Bursary application period. If you applied previously during our Work-Study application period (back in November) for the Spring 2019 term, please do not apply again. Your application will automatically be reviewed for bursary funding for the Spring term. For more information please visit the Financial Aid and Awards website.

Undergraduate scholarships and awards application deadline

The Undergraduate Scholarship and Award application is currently open. The application and supporting documents deadline for Spring term is Friday January 11. The online application can be found on goSFU under Apply for Scholarships/Awards. No late applications/ documentation will be accepted. More information.

Are you a new student needing an SFU ID Card? Visit our ID Facility at the Burnaby campus in MBC 1302, open from January 2 - 17. Students can also get their ID cards at Surrey and Vancouver campuses during regular office hours.

Restorative Justice

There is still time to register for Introduction to Restorative Justice which begins online January 21. You will learn about the psychology of harm and how restorative processes like dialogue and consensus-building support trauma recovery and prevent harm. Holiday closures

All campus offices will be closed between Tuesday December 25 and Tuesday January 1 inclusive. Also, many offices may be closing early on December 24.

Spring term program on HIV/AIDS

Still not sure what to take in the Spring term? Apply to participate in the (5-credit) Spring 2019 President's Dream Colloquium on HIV/AIDS. This Colloquium aims to inspire and mobilize the next generation of researchers, policy-makers, activists, artists and advocates with an interdisciplinary understanding of the past, current, and future response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Classes are held mainly at SFU's Burnaby campus with a couple of lectures taking place at SFU Vancouver and SFU Surrey's campuses on Tuesday evenings (5:30–8:30 PM). Applications will be accepted until the first week of classes!

Parking permits for the Spring Term are currently for sale at the Parking & Sustainable Mobility Office at MBC 0027. Outdoor and Indoor permits often sell out within the first day or two of the term, so buy your permit now for best selection.

Map the System is a global competition organized by the University of Oxford that challenges students to think differently about social or environmental change. Bennett Library 24/7

Bennett Library at the Burnaby campus will be open 24 hours every day from 8:00am on Monday November 19 to 10:00pm on Sunday December 16 to support students writing papers and completing assignments, as well as studying for exams. Fraser Library (Surrey campus) also has extended hours from November 26 to December 15.

Winter Warm-up

"If power is not transferred, engagement is not meaningful." Check out this incredible discussion about engagement and power, featuring Taylor McKinney of the SFU OLC and Aslam Bulbulia, one of last year's Student-Community Engagement Competition finalists. • "Robust Interaction in Human and Robot Teams" - President’s Faculty Lecture with Dr. Richard Vaughan, Surrey campus.  Dr. Vaughan’s Autonomy Lab develops mobile robot systems that exploit the latest sensing technology to perform sophisticated, robust interactions with the world and each other. He’ll describe a series of vision-mediated Human-Robot Interactions with teams of driving and flying robots, and explain why this work is quickly becoming important outside the lab. Apply to participate in the (5-credit) Spring 2019 President's Dream Colloquium on HIV/AIDS

This Colloquium aims to inspire and mobilize the next generation of researchers, policy-makers, activists, artists and advocates with an interdisciplinary understanding of the past, current, and future response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Classes are held mainly at SFU's Burnaby Campus with a couple of lectures taking place at SFU Vancouver and SFU Surrey's campuses on Tuesday evenings (5:30–8:30 PM). Second annual SLC Writing Contest

SLC Writing Contest deadline is December 16. We are accepting submissions of papers written for any SFU undergraduate course in the 2018 calendar year (up to and including papers being written for submission this term). In additional to cash prizes for first, second, and third place, we will publish all contest winners and honourable mentions in an Open Journal and will celebrate the contest winners with a "invitation-only" reading of their work.

DEMOfest 2018: Flexible Education

DEMOfest is SFU’s annual showcase of teaching and learning solutions held at Halpern Centre on Wednesday November 21 from 10:00am - 2:00pm. It’s an interactive exhibition for the entire academic community (students included), and this year features 20 tables and 11 presentations with an emphasis on Flexible Education. Drop in for an hour or stay for the whole day. It’s free, there’s no need to register, and there will be refreshments. 

Sum of Our Memories Exhibition

In collaboration with Turn/Up Press (the student imprint of CISP Press at SFU), PUB 431 students explore different facets of memory while investigating the formats of publication and the act of publishing itself, to explore how form and content can enhance or distort the experience of reading the material at hand. The exhibition features unique student projects on the theme of memory and nostalgic candy to enhance the experience. Nov 30–Dec 20 at Belzberg Library, SFU Vancouver campus.

Registrar and Information Services notices

• The 2019 Spring term (1191) class schedules are now available for viewing at goSFU using class search.

Change in refund cheque policy

If you are expecting to pick up a refund cheque from Student Accounts, please note that your cheque will not be released until you enroll in Direct Deposit to your Canadian bank account. To pick up your refund cheque you must either show in goSFU that you have already signed up for Direct Deposit or bring a Direct Deposit slip filled out by your bank or a blank/void cheque from your Canadian bank account so we can set up Direct Deposit for you. 

Cheques not picked up by January 20, 2019, will be destroyed (your student account will be credited the amount) and no future refunds will be issued until you have signed up for Direct Deposit.

Sterling Prize ceremony

Hellenic Studies Fall series

Twice a month, Hellenic Studies presents scholars working in the fields of Archaeology, Classics, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek History, as well as Literary and Cultural Studies, who share their research on Greece and Hellenic issues. Dr. Niki Tsironis from the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Greece is presenting a lecture entitled "Female Deities of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Emergence of the Cult of the Virgin Mary" at the Morris J. Learning Spaces Town Hall Tuesday 

What works in classroom spaces? What doesn’t work? SFU’s Learning Spaces Design Committee is working with consultants to examine the physical learning spaces on all SFU campuses. They want your input at a Town Hall on Tuesday September 25 in the Diamond Family Auditorium, Burnaby campus. (Prizes!) There’s an Open House from 11:30am - 12:30pm followed by a presentation and question and answer session from 12:30 - 2:00pm. The presentation will be a Live Webcast and also there will be consultants at kiosks at both Surrey and Vancouver campuses during the session on Tuesday. Student leader wanted for University Social Responsibility Network

We’re looking for a student leader who has been actively involved in projects that promote university social responsibility and community partnership. The student must have the ability, knowledge and experience to deliver a presentation on SFU to a large audience. At the Summit, which will be attended by university deans and presidents from around the world, the student will present on SFU’s academic initiatives, programs or projects that promote social responsibility. Tuition is due Monday September 17

Deadlines

The last day to drop courses for 100% refund of tuition is September 10. Check out all the deadlines at www.sfu.ca/students/deadlines. 

New student ID cards

Are you a new student needing an SFU ID Card? Visit our ID Facility at the Burnaby campus in MBC 1302, open through Monday September 17. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 6:00pm, Fridays 8:00am - 4:30pm. Students can also get their ID cards at Surrey and Vancouver campuses during regular office hours.

Club days

SFSS Fall Club Days are September 11 - 14 on Burnaby campus, and September 18 - 19 at Surrey campus from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Different clubs each day so visit often.

Registrar and Information Services hours

Streetfest September 14

The Streetfest festival features live music, craft beer, street performers, food vendors, artisans, SFU groups and clubs, community organizations and UniverCity businesses. The festivities begin at noon Friday September 14 with University High Street closed to cars, and will cap-off with the showing of The Lego Movie at 7:30pm and the opening of the Trottier Observatory at 9:00pm. (This is a zero waste event.)

September 14 road closure

On Friday, September 14, University High Street between the bus loop and Tower Road will be closed and buses will be rerouted from 10:00am - 8:00pm. There will be no service to bus stops on Tower Road and South Campus Road from 10:00am - 8:00pm, and no pick-up service at Transportation Centre bus Bay 1 during those hours, due to the Streetfest festival. Football and volleyball on September 22

Wear red! SFU students and staff admitted free.

• Play games and win prizes at the Red Night Carnival on September 22! The annual Red Night volleyball tradition will feature carnival games, a Nesters Welcome BBQ and rival Western Washington. First serve is at 7:00pm.
• SFU football won its first game in four years (54-7 under our new coach!) and the team will carry that momentum into an evening game against rival Central Washington, 6:00pm at Terry Fox Field on September 22.

• Calling Bullshit on Fake News: Free Public Lecture for President's Dream Colloquium. Jevin D. West is an Assistant Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington and co-founder of the DataLab. He is an affiliate faculty member the Center for Statistics and Social Sciences and a Data Science Fellow at the eScience Institute. With his colleague, Carl Bergstrom, he developed a new course on Calling BS for combatting misinformation, with a particular emphasis on data, figures, visualizations and statistics. Parking changes on Burnaby campus

This fall we made changes to help reduce parking congestion across the Burnaby campus. The following parking changes came into effect on September 1 (www.sfu.ca/parking.html):

• Hourly / Daily Rates in North Lot (map, pdf) have increased to $5/hr and $25/day (by Blusson / Saywell)
• Hourly / Daily Rates in all other lots remain at $3.25/hr and $13/day
• There is a new Residence West Lot which has an all-day rate of $6.50 if you park before 10:00am (some permits may still be available)
• Parking ticket fines are increasing from $30 to $50

Convocation October 4 and 5

Convocation Fall 2018 will be held on October 4 and 5 in Convocation Mall with ceremonies at 9:45am and 2:30pm each day. The full Convocation schedule is online.

Offices closed Monday October 8

All classes are cancelled and offices will be closed on Monday October 8 in celebration of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Come watch SFU football open its season against the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday September 1 at Terry Fox Field. Kick-off is at 3:00pm. Come early and enjoy the Nesters Market $1 Welcome BBQ, free access to the climbing wall (2:00 -7:00pm) and performances by the Robert Malcolm Memorial Junior Pipe Band. SFU students and staff admitted free.

Be aware that it is still bear season. If you see a bear on the Burnaby campus, please remain calm. Keep yourself and any children and pets away from the bear, and contact Campus Security at 778-782-4500.

24/7 Mental health services

SFU students have free access to a 24/7 multi-platform mental health and support service. With My SSP, all graduate and undergraduate students have access to immediate or ongoing, confidential support - accessible from anywhere in the world by phone or through the downloadable My SSP app in English, French, Korean, Chinese, Arabic and Spanish. Culturally relevant support and counselling in multiple additional languages will also be available. It will complement existing mental health services, supports and initiatives at SFU.

Fire prevention on campus

A combination of the improper disposal of cigarettes and extremely dry weather can cause bark mulch and grass fires. If you do smoke, please ensure that burning items are extinguished and disposed of properly in a designated ash tray or ash urn. (PDF Map).

Town Square (by the main bus loop) offers local Food Trucks, games and entertainment every Wednesday between 11:30am - 2:00pm through September 12.
