Since COVID, there have been many challenges that affect students’ ability to travel and arrive in Canada. Although we have seen the easing of travel restrictions, we know that there may still be some concerns or questions about how best to prepare to arrive in Vancouver. We have created a guide below to help support you prepare for your arrival!

Arriving in Canada

When you first arrive in Canada, you will want to have considered how you are getting to and from the airport, where are you staying and how to get your first meals. In consideration of this we have some information on transportation, accommodation options, and securing meals to help you plan for a smooth transition

Port of entry expectations

Transportation

If you are arriving from the Vancouver Airport (YVR), please proceed to the International Arrivals Area, Level 2 to arrange and wait for your taxi, Uber, or Lyft.

  1. Uber or Lyft: You will need to download the Uber or Lyft app directly to your cell phone from the App Store or Google Play in order to use these ride share services. Instructions are available in the app. The app will connect you with nearby drivers who are able to drive you to your place of quarantine

Accommodation

When you arrive you may need a place to stay. Whether that is for self-isolation, while you look for long term accommodation, or wait to move into residence or off campus housing. One option is to stay at a local hotel. SFU has worked with a few different hotels to give you a student rate to aid in your transition.

    Free Cancellation. Please let the hotel know if you are checking in after 10pm on day of arrival or booking may be voided. 
  • May 1, 2022- September 30, 2022:
    No charge for cancellations by 4PM on the day prior to the arrival date. First night room & tax will be charged for any cancellations within 24 hours of arrival date. No Show Policy: first night room & tax will be charged for any no show reservations. Early Departure: early departure requests will be accepted with notification to the front desk by 11:00AM and checked out by 11:00AM on that day
