Academic accommodations are handled on a case-by-case basis at the start of every semester. Students are responsible for initiating contact with the CSD and scheduling an appointment with a Disability Access Advisor to review their individual needs, courses, and disability documentation. Because each disability and the particular circumstances surrounding each request are unique, it is impossible to pre-determine what accommodations might be provided to any particular student. Accommodations that the Centre recommends may differ from the accommodations you initially requested, or the accommodations you may have received in high school, at other educational institutions, or in past terms at SFU.
The accommodations recommended by the CSD are based on many factors including, but not limited to:
- The implications of your disability for various academic activities, as indicated in your professional disability documentation
- The requirements of your course or program of study
- Your history of using accommodations and other methods of coping
- The findings of the Needs Assessment completed in consultation with a Learning Specialist
The CSD will make every effort to accommodate you, and you should make every effort to adhere to the procedures for acquiring accommodations as described in the following pages. These procedures are implemented to ensure that you and all other students receive reasonable and fair accommodations, and that our standards for determining accommodations are applied equally to all students.
