Garden Therapy for Racialized Students

Identity, Upcoming

While self-care can help with reducing the effects of stress, horticulture therapy (garden therapy) activities offer a fun and comforting way to achieve a similar outcome.

What is Garden Therapy?

Have you ever had a day where nothing seemed like it could go right?

Sometimes the stresses of daily life seem too much to handle. While self-care can help with reducing the effects of stress, horticulture therapy (garden therapy) activities offer a fun and comforting way to achieve a similar outcome.

Horticulture therapy involves the interaction with plants to aid in strengthening the body and mind. Although touching and feeling plants has been proven to boost moods and reduce stress, the full effects of horticulture therapy are best handled with the help of a professional therapist. You can pair the act of planting, maintaining, and harvesting with therapy concepts that cultivate personal growth and resiliency.

We invite IBPOC persons to join us for our first four weeks of garden therapy, focused on planting, from March 25th - April 22nd 2022.

Location:

Planting – Think of seed or seedling as a thought – “you will reap what you sow” – You produce the actions you choose to think. What thoughts are the best seeds for you?

  • Friday, March 25th, 3-4pm
  • Friday, April 1st, 3-4pm
  • Friday, April 8th, 3-4pm
  • Friday, April 22nd, 3-4pm

Maintenance – Think of tending to the plant like taking care of your wellbeing - “it will grow where you water it” – you are the active agent in the story. Your actions/choices directly impact your future. What type of maintenance does your plant need?

  • Friday, May 27, 3 - 4pm
  • Friday, June 3, 3 - 4pm
  • Friday, June 10, 3 - 4pm
  • Friday, June 17, 3 - 4pm

Harvesting – Celebrate growth and identify when its time to enjoy the fruits of your labour – “work hard, play hard” – the celebration is just as important as the work

4 sessions September – October 2022
