Elimination of paper applications for most in-Canada extensions

June 04, 2019

Effective immediately, if you are applying for a study permit, work permit, or visitor record from within Canada, in most cases you will no longer have the option to submit a paper application. Instead, you must apply online (with a few exceptions).

This includes the following applications:

  • Applying for a new study permit or work permit
  • Applying to extend your study permit or work permit
  • Applying for a post-graduation work permit or a co-op work permit
  • Applying to stay in Canada as a visitor

The above applies to your status documents/permits only. If you are in Canada and holding a valid study or work permit you can still apply for a new temporary resident visa/TRV (if required) from within Canada either by paper to the Case Processing Centre in Ottawa or online.

For more information, please visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website
