Update on the Medical Services Plan (MSP) for international students

August 28, 2019

International students with a study permit valid for a period of six or more months are required to apply for the MSP (B.C.'s health-care coverage) as soon as they arrive in British Columbia.

Starting on September 1, 2019, the BC government is introducing a health care coverage fee for all international students holding a study permit. This fee will be charged in addition to any MSP premium you currently pay. On January 1, 2020, the health care coverage fee will increase and the premium for MSP will be eliminated. The fees you can expect are as follows:

Effective September 1, 2019:

$75/month for study permit holders studying at the post-secondary level
($37.50 BC MSP premium + $37.50 health care coverage fee)

$37.50/month for international K-12 students holding a study permit
($37.50 health care coverage fee only)

Effective January 1, 2020:

$75/month for all study permit holders
($75 health care coverage fee only)
