As we’re currently in a virtual environment it’s even more important that we help set you up to be successful in your first term, and first year at SFU!
Within SFU 101, we've created a fun and engaging way to build a virtual community to make new friends and help you find your people, called The HIVE Program, which will be your Home for Interactive Virtual Engagement. SFU101 kicks off in early August, so make sure you register right away once you receive your invite to the course in Canvas (make sure to check your SFU email).
The HIVE Program will place you in a small group with fellow students who are taking some of the same courses, live in the same time zone or have similar social interests.
All new SFU undergraduate students who want to have an epic educational journey—that’s who, and hopefully you too!
There will be lots of HIVES created with a small group of students who have similar courses, time zones or interests.
Each HIVE will be overseen by a Senior Welcome Leader and 1-2 Welcome Leaders and they will support virtual events and programming. They will share tips, stories and their own experiences as well as creating some fun and interactive events and opportunities to participate in discussions within your HIVE in SFU 101. You’ll also get to meet peers and learn about campus resources, exploring Canvas and other tech/social media platforms with you.
Short answer: It’s an awesome way to find your people and be part of the SFU community!
Slightly longer answer: It’s a great way to meet fellow new SFU students who are in the same virtual shoes as you — taking some of the same courses, living in the same time zone or have similar social interests. We know how exciting (and a bit nerve-wracking) it is to start something new and we’re here to help make it fun and interesting. We’re confident, and know from our own experiences, that some of the friendships made at university are vital and lifelong. We care about you and we’re creating a smooth transition to SFU--you won’t be alone on this new journey as you’ll be connected with other new, like-minded SFU students plus senior student leaders who will share tips, stories and their experiences at the university.
We’re building the programming based on your recent survey results. Here is a sampling of the feedback when asked what SFU students are looking for in The HIVE Program:
- "I’d like to know where people come from and how that has shaped them, as well as where they want to go."
- "If I were to pick, I'd like to know what types of extracurriculars or programs they were involved in during their time in high school and how that helped them become the person they are today. This is a good way to find out what programs and extracurricular activities I can participate in."
- "I think being able to connect with people and still make friends virtually would make me feel welcomed."
- "Being able to make friends, because that would really help. Being able to talk to people. Study groups would be very nice where we can share ideas and help each other with work."
We’ll take care of that! Our team will review your information and place you in your HIVE, with fellow students who share the same courses, time zones, and interests with you.
As we're in the process of planning the activities for this program, we're continually keeping your needs and experience top of mind.
When you see the honeycomb/bee graphic on a discussion page, it's an indication that this conversation is for your HIVE community; only the members of your HIVE and your Leaders will see your responses.
You will receive your invitation to join SFU 101 and HIVEs via email in early August so stay tuned!
