Summer Term – Orientation

Are you a new undergraduate student coming straight from high school? Are you transferring from another post-secondary institution? Are you an international student? We have a whole suite of orientation activities for you!

New summer FIC students

If you are a new student starting at FIC in May, please see FIC Orientation.

Welcome Day

Welcome Day is for all new undergraduate students. During this day you will:

  • meet your professors, classmates and the SFU staff who will help launch your time at SFU
  • find out more about your program of study
  • get comfortable on campus
  • receive SFU swag, including a t-shirt

A registration link for this event will be sent to your SFU e-mail in April.

Taking classes at another campus

Starting in a program based at the Surrey or Vancouver campus? This Welcome Day is intended for you as well. You will meet staff from your faculty, as well as fellow classmates, even if you won’t be taking classes at the Burnaby campus this term.

Welcome Guides for International and Newcomer Students

Welcome guides by international pathways are for the following students:

Connect with students and staff at the Welcome/Welcome Back Reception. Enjoy food, games and prizes. This event is open to all international, exchange, undergraduate and graduate students.

Residence Week of Welcome

Residence Week of Welcome is for all students who have a confirmed housing offer and will be moving into SFU Residence. After you move in, you will have the opportunity to:

  • participate in a variety of events and opportunities aimed at welcoming you to your new community
  • connect you with other residents
  • prepare you for the upcoming semester 

This is in addition to campus events such as University Prep and Welcome Day.

University Prep

What is it?

It's a free online course that will help you prepare for SFU. It will take you step by step through what you need to know and do before arriving on campus. You will learn about the academic culture, degree requirements, course enrollment procedures, and our wide range of opportunities and resources.

Who is it for?

All new undergraduate students.

How do I access the course?

Once you have activated your SFU ID, please allow 5-7 business days to receive your course invitation. The course invitation will be sent to your SFU email.

Course content

  • Degree planning, scheduling tools, SFU policy, student life, enrollment timeline
  • How-tos of using your SFU ID, enrolling in courses, registering for transition events

Why do University Prep?

  • Assessment evidence shows that students who complete the course have higher rates of academic success and GPAs than those who don't.
  • If you complete all modules, you will be entered for a chance to win bookstore credit.
  • You will receive your first Co-Curricular Record accreditation!
