 As we continue to prioritize the health & safety of our community, SFU Athletics and Recreation is phasing in access to our facilities based on the guidelines and recommendations of local health officials and the University.  Effective, Monday, September 21, access to the Lorne Davies Complex will be restricted to the fitness centre and swimming pool.  Limited access to these services will be provided to current students, staff and faculty who are on campus.  Please see below for further information. 

New health and safety protocols, facility access details and FAQ's are outlined below. Please visit this page regularly for up-to-date information.

Facility Updates

Aquatic Centre

Reservation Instructions:

Note: Aquatic online reservations become available 48 hours before the designated time slot and close 15 minutes before the start time. 

Step 1
  • To reserve a time-slot in the Aquatics Centre, visit the SFU Rec Web Portal. Log-in using your SFU ID and password.
  • Click on the three black lines to the left of the SFU Recreation logo. Click "Memberships".
  • Click "SFU Lorne Davies Complex Membership". Select the 1 term option and click "Add to Cart".
  • Sign the updated Athletics and Recreation liability waiver. 
  • Click "Checkout" and complete the registration. You will see a green bar that says "Payment was Successful".

 

  • Click on the three black lines to the left of the SFU recreation logo. Click "Programs & Certifications". 
  • Under "Classification" choose "Facility Access Reservations". Click "Aquatic Lane Swim Reservations".
  • Find the date and time that you would like to attend the Aquatic Centre. Click "Register".
  • Complete COVID-19 health screening questions, then click "Add to Cart".
  • Click "Checkout" and complete the registration. You will see a green bar that says "Payment was Successful".
  • You will then be emailed a confirmation receipt for your booking. Please bring your student/staff ID card to your booking. 

 

What to Expect

  • Aquatics Centre session start-times are: 

            - Monday to Friday 11:30am; 12:30pm; 4:30pm; 5:30pm

  • Members may reserve 1-40 minute swim session per day. Aquatic online reservations become available 48 hours before the designated time slot and close 15 minutes before the start time. Please see below for reservation instructions. 
  • Please only arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled session. 
  • Enter the Lorne Davies Complex via the main entrance doors on the 8000 Level (by the Rec Sports Office and Pool).
  • Your SFU ID or Photo ID is required.
  • We highly recommend members wear a face mask when entering the Lorne Davies Complex, and while in our indoor spaces, before and after your reserved session.
  • A health screening questionnaire & temperature reading will be facilitated by staff upon entry to the Lorne Davies Complex. 
  • Upon successful completion of the health screening, members will proceed to the Aquatic Centre.
  • Upon entry to the Aquatics Centre, a staff will greet each member and verify their reserved time-slot.
  • Maximum capacity for the Aquatics Centre will be capped at 9 (6 in main pool; 3 in dive tank).
  • Access is limited to registered members only – no spectators will be permitted. 
  • Plexiglas has been installed at all help desks.
  • Swimmers are to arrive swim ready. Please bring your own:

            - Towels

            - Goggles

            - Swim Cap

            - Water filled bottle

  • There will be a designated waiting area upon arrival to ensure physical distancing.
  • Single swimmer per lane, with swimmers asked to swim directly in middle of the lane to avoid getting too close to other swimmers in adjacent lanes.
  • Members will be provided with one plastic folding chair to put their belongings on. Members will spray and wipe their chair after each use.
  • Staff will be responsible for: 

            - All touchpoints around the pool after use

            - Ongoing cleaning of Aquatics Centre equipment through regularly scheduled shift

            - Deep clean of all available equipment in between swim sessions (15 minutes)

  • Washrooms within the Lorne Davies Complex will be open for use.
  • Members are encouraged to bring their own pre-filled water bottle.  Contactless refill stations will be available.
  • Change-rooms, showers and lockers remain closed. Please come prepared for your swim session. 
  • Upon completion of their swim session, members will exit through the north east glass doors on the pool deck.

Climbing Wall

  • The climbing wall remains closed as we phase in access to our facilities
  • Updates regarding the opening status of the climbing wall will be posted here once moreinfomration is available.

  • No equipment (bands, rollers, etc) will be lent out.
  • No spotting or working out in groups.
  • Each member will be provided their own disinfected spray bottle and should clean all touch points on machines they use before and after use.
  • Staff will be responsible for: 

            - All touchpoints of machines after use

            - Ongoing cleaning of Fitness Centre equipment through regularly scheduled shift

            - Deep clean of all available equipment in between workout sessions (30 minutes)

  • Washrooms within the Lorne Davies Complex will be open for use.
  • Members are encouraged to bring their own pre-filled water bottle.  Contactless refill stations will be available.
  • Change-rooms, showers and lockers remain closed. Please come prepared for your work-out session.
  • Upon completion of their work-out session, members are will exit the Fitness Centre through the west-most doors and exit the Lorne Davies Complex through the lower or upper level exit doors. 

Lockers

  • Our gym lockers and change rooms remain closed for public access. If you require your gym locker contents immediately, please email rec@sfu.ca.
  • Book lockers in Burnaby and Surrey are accessible as campus buildings remain open with limited access. Please review the SFU COVID-19 FAQ page for building access hours. 
  • Please see our FAQ at the bottom of this page for locker refund information.

Outdoor Track & Tennis Courts

  • The outdoor track, sports fields, and tennis courts are primarily being used for scheduled athletics and recreation programming.
  • When not in use by Athletics and Recreation, these facilities are available to the general campus community.
  • Please adhere to all posted signage and practice physical distancing.  

Squash & Racquetball Courts

  • Squash and racquetball courts are currently unavailable for public use. 
  • Updates regarding the opening status of these facilities will be posted here once more information is available. 

 

 

Safety Procedures and Practices

Health Screening

Upon arrival to the Lorne Davies Complex, staff will facilitate a pre-activity health screening questionnaire. This will include the following 4 questions and a temperature reading.  Please make sure to have valid photo or SFU identification when you arrive. 

Staff at the screening station will take your temperature using an infrared thermometer. Members with a temperature reading of 38 degrees Celsius or higher will not be permitted to participate.

We ask that you please stay home if you answer "yes" to any of the health screening questions or if you have a fever.

Are you experiencing any of the following?

· Severe difficulty breathing (e.g. struggling to breath or speaking in single words)

· Severe chest pain

· Having a very hard time waking up

· Feeling confused

· Losing consciousness

· Mild to moderate shortness of breath

· Inability to lie down because of difficulty of breathing

· Chronic health conditions that you are having difficulty managing because of difficulty of breathing

Are you experiencing cold, flu or COVID-19-like symptoms, even mild ones?

Symptoms include: Fever*, chills, cough or worsening of chronic cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose, loss of sense of smell or taste, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, muscle aches.

While less common, symptoms can also include: stuffy nose, conjunctivitis (pink eye), dizziness, confusion, abdominal pain, skin rashes or discoloration of fingers or toes.

*Fever: Average normal body temperature taken orally is about 37°C.

Have you travelled to any countries outside of Canada (including the United States) within the last 14 days?

Did you provide care or have close contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19 within the last 14 days?

Safety Procedures

The following rules and guidelines are in place at our facilities to ensure the safety of our staff and members. Please review and adhere to the safety procedures outlined below. Additional specific safety measures are in place for each facility, please review above under "Facility Updates".

Please keep at least 2m physical distance from others in our facility.

We highly recommend members wear a face mask when entering the Lorne Davies Complex, and while in our indoor spaces, before and after your reserved session.

Wash hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds using soap and water.

If a sink is not available, 60-90% alcohol-based hand saniziter can be used to clean hands.

Arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your reserved time-slot, and leave promptly when time-slot ends.  

Please arrive wearing what you will be working out in, change room facilities will not be open.

Members are encouraged to bring their own pre-filled water bottle.  Contactless refill stations will be available.

Please follow signs for our designated entrances, exits, line-ups, and directional walk-ways.

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to use the facilities?

  • As we slowly re-open our facilities, we are excited to initially provide access to the Fitness Centre and Aquatics Centre for students, staff & faculty who are on campus.  We will continue to assess our operatons and phase in additional services and access in the coming weeks and months.

Will there be a fee to use the Athletics & Recreation facilities?

  • At this time, there will not be a fee charged to use the fitness centre or swimming pool.

Was the Recreation & Athletics Fee assessed to students for the Fall 2020 semester?

  • The Athletics & Recreation fee was not assessed for the Fall 2020 semester.
  • Signing the Athletics & Recreation liability waiver online will not result in any fee assessments to your account.

How do I register for a fitness or aquatic session online?

  • Access to the fitness centre and pool will require reserving a time-slot online at least one hour beforehand. Drop-ins are unavailable at this time.
  • Students, staff and faculty who would like to use our facilities must obtain an SFU Facility Access Membership first and then can proceed to online reservations for the fitness centre and pool.

Will there be access to washrooms, water fountains, change-rooms, showers and lockers?

  • Washrooms within the Lorne Davies Complex will be open for use.
  • Water fountains will not be available. Please bring your own, pre-filled water bottle. 
  • Change-rooms, showers and lockers remain closed. Please come prepared for your work-out.
  • Patrons are asked to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your scheduled workout, and leave immediately after. 

Will I receive a refund for a locker that I purchased prior to SFU Recreation's closure? Can I renew my current locker?

  • Locker services remain suspended for the Fall term. Fall term locker holders will be contacted over the coming weeks regarding the refund process.
  • Lockers purchased for the Spring and Summer terms will be refunded on a pro-rated basis. Locker holders have been emailed about the refund process.
  • Spring and Summer term locker holders were provided with the option to renew for the Fall term. Contents will remain in lockers and will not be removed without prior notification to locker holders.

How can I access my SFU Gym/Pool locker to retrieve my items? Will my items be removed?

  • If you would like to pick-up the items from your gym/pool locker, please email rec@sfu.ca and ask for instructions. Our staff will let you know the best way to retrieve your contents.
  • Items from lockers will not be removed (regardless of if you renewed or not) until our regular locker services resume. We will contact locker holders well in advance as to when the locker clear date will be. 

Will I receive a refund for a membership/program I purchased prior to SFU Recreation's closure?

  • Program refunds: Our office is currently processing pro-rated refunds for registered programs from the Spring 2020 Semester. If you are eligible for a refund, we will contact you directly to process that.
  • Membership refunds: Our office will begin processing membership refunds for memberships during our closure in the Spring over the coming weeks.

When will in-person programs resume?

  • We are slowly phasing in our operations and will continue working towards offering more services in the coming weeks and months based on the guidelines and recommendations of local health officials and the University.

Can I book a fitness studio, dance studio or meeting space within the Lorne Davies Complex?

  • SFU Athletics and Recreation has closed their facilities to all external rentals through Monday, October 12, 2020. A review will be made at that time and we will continue to adapt processes as necessary, with a focus on safety and adhering to public health guidelines.

What additional cleaning procedures are in place at the Lorne Davies Complex?

  • SFU’s contracted janitorial service provider has implemented a high touch point cleaning/disinfection initiative which involves the cleaning and disinfection of high touch point surfaces in public spaces, including elevator panel and buttons, washrooms, partitions, flush handles, door handles and push bars, garbage lids, and blue phones.
