Just Climbing

Staff Belayed Drop-In

• The best drop-in option for new or partnerless climbers.

Never climbed before or find yourself without a climbing partner? Drop-in during scheduled times and have our staff hold the ropes for you. Drop-ins operate on 1:5 ratio staff to climber and are provided on a first come first serve basis as staff are available. Groups of 3 or more may not be possible to accomodate. Please note that lead belays are not offered by staff. All children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult.

  • Staff belay is included with purchase of climbing day pass / membership.

Belay Session

• A great social or team building activity for groups.

Got 3 or people more and want to try climbing? Book SFU Climbing Staff to belay your group. This 2 hour session is great for events, social activities, team building or just friends wanting to try something new.

Maximum group size is 45. Mimimum age is 6 years. Price includes rentals. Please note that booking availability may be limited by facility useage levels and avilable staff. Larger groups (12+) and those looking to book in the evenings should inquire well in advance.

Instructional Courses

Introductory Course

• For new climbers wanting to learn belaying basics.

Learn the basics of top-rope belaying from SFU Climbing Wall Instructors. After this 2 hour course, you and a climbing partner will be able to safely and confidently use the SFU Climbing Wall on your own. We recommend trying one of our "Just Climbing" options if you haven't been on the wall before. Minimum age is 14.

Cost

  • Community - $40.00
  • Participants recieive a Climbing Wall day pass for use on the day of their course.

  • Wednesdays: 6:30 - 8:30 (May 22nd - June 26th)

Lead Climbing Course

• For intermediate climbers looking to take the next step

Leading is an essential skill for experienced climbers looking to expand the scope of their climbing. This 3-hour course includes clipping, dynamic belay techniques, risk assessment/management and proper fall arrest techniques. 

Cost:

SFU Student: $50.00 | Community: $75.00

Course Requirements

  • Ages 14+. No exceptions.
  • Must have passed a top-rope belay test at the SFU Climbing Wall. A minimum of 6-months top-rope climbing experience is strongly recommended. 
  • Must be confidently climbing at the 5.10a level.

Important Notes - Please read before booking a course: 

  • Due to the nature of the course content, instructors reserve the right to cancel the course if 1 or more participants are late by 15 minutes or more. Please arrive 5  -10 minutes before your scheduled course to meet your instructor and ensure you are ready to go on time. 
  • Courses are 3 hours long. Please ensure both partners are able to stay for the entire duration. 
  • Courses run at a 1:2 staff to participant ratio. If you don't have a climbing partner, to take the course with, let us know! We can put you on our waitlist to find one. 
  • For safety reasons, climbing partners must be of similar weight. Neither partner must outweigh the other by 150% or more (ex: If Partner 1 is 100lbs, Partner 2 cannot be more than 150lbs.).

Lead Climbing Refresher

• For those with previous lead climbing/belaying experience who need some supervised practice or a refresher on current best techniques.

Did you learn lead climbing/belaying from a friend outside and want to learn proper best practices? Did you take a lead course but want a bit more time with an instructor? Has it been a few years since you took your last lead?

This course is for anyone who has lead climbing/belaying experience, but isn't confident in their ability to meet SFU belay check standards.

Cost:

SFU Student: $25.00 | Community: $37.50

Course Requirements

  • Sufficent lead climbing experience.
  • Ages 14+. No exceptions.
  • Must have passed a top-rope belay test at the SFU Climbing Wall.
  • Must be confidently climbing at the 5.10a level.

  • This course is not a substitute for a "Lead Climbing Course". Administration reserves the right decline enrollment in this course to anyone who does not (in our judgement) have suficient previous lead climbing experience.

Rookie to Rock Climber Program

• Get your Climbing off to the best possible start!

From your first climbs, to learning the ropes, to gaining an understanding of climbing technique, certified SFU instructors will be there every step of the way. The Rookie to Rock Climber program is designed to take participants from the very beginning to having the skills and knowledge to integrate with the SFU climbing community. A climbing wall membership is included for the duration of this course. Minimum age is 16.

Pre-program trial: Drop in and try climbing for free during trial week (May 13 -17)!

Day 1: Top Rope Belay Skills (replaces Introductory Course)

Day 2: Climbing practice and technique

Day 3 and beyond: Terminology, technique application and next steps

Youth & Families 

Birthday Belay Session

• A unique birthday adventure for kids 7+.

Have SFU staff hold the ropes for a fun filled birthday adventure on the wall. Our experienced staff can ensure safety while your group has a blast climbing. Birthday sessions include 1.5 hours of climbing time and 1 additional hour in SFU Recreation's VIP Room. Suitable for ages 7+.

Youth REC Climbing Program

• A multi-week climbing program that gives youth the skills to have fun and be safe on the wall.

Climb on SFU's indoor climbing wall! This multi-week program is an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing. Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Please note, participants will be taught how to belay, an essential climbing skill which requires youth to be responsible for each other’s safety. 

Suitable for Ages 9-15.

Spring 2019 Dates & Times:

Sundays, 10am - 12 pm,  Jan 6 to Apr 7. Please note due to special events and stat holidays, there will be no program some weeks. View booking link below for more info.

SFU Pro-D Day Camps

• Full day multi-sport camps for school-age children.

Available on select Pro-D days, these full day camps will take advantage of the great recreation options at SFU including Climbing, Swimming and Gymnasiums.

Climbing Camp

• Week-long climbing camps for youth ages 9-14 (all experience levels welcome).

Climb on SFU's indoor climbing wall! These camps are an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing.

Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Participants will be taught how to belay, an important skill that requires campers to be responsible for each other's safety.

Suitable for ages 9-14. Available over Spring Break and Summer months only.

Friday Field Trips

• Half or full-day multi-sport field trips.

These field trips take advantage of the great recreation options at SFU including Climbing, Swimming and Gymnasiums. Full and half day options are available.

School Belay Session

• 2 full hours of climbing for school and youth groups.

Book SFU Climbing Staff to hold the ropes for your school or youth group. This 2 hour climbing session maxmizes time on the wall - great for promoting exercise, physical literacy and team-building!

Suitable for ages  8 and up. Maximum group size is 45.

How to book:

Learn to Climb Multi-Week Field Trips

• Lessons that give youth the tools to improve their skills and climb independently.

In this multi day program, participants learn the essentials of climbing in the gym. As this program instructs on skills that can be used in the future, it's perfect for introducing climbing as part of an active lifestyle.

Day 1: Safety Essentials- Participants learn how to put on a harness, tie a figure 8 follow through knot, belay (a term for holding the rope to keep a climber safe), check their system and communicate safely. 

Day 2: Climbing -Participant skills are assessed and put to good use as they climb and belay together.

Day 3 and beyond (optional): Climbing Technique and Movement  - Participants learn the basics of proper climbing technique as they continue to practice their safety essentials.

Each session is 2 hours. Suitable for ages 11 and up.

Cost: 

$40.00 per participant for 2 sessions. Additional sessions may be booked at a reduced rate.
