SFU Recreation is excited to offer Indoor Climbing as part of its programming.  The Climbing Wall is located in the Lorne Davies Complex - Central Gymnasium.

Below is information on hours, types of climbing available, rates, programs and more.  If you're new to climbing, pelase visit our "Programs" section for the best ways to use the wall.

GETTING STARTED

How to use the Climbing Wall

1)    Getting to Campus & Parking

·         The Climbing Wall is located in the Lorne Davies Complex - Central Gymnasium.  

·         The Climbing Office is located in the lobby area beside the Climbing Wall.

2)    Payment and Waiver

·         Climbing Passes, Memberships & Equipment must be purchased at the Recreation Office (located beside the pool), during Recreation Office Business Hours.

·         Pay and complete a Liability Waiver or SFU Climbing Parent/Guardian Consent Form at the Recreation Office or Climbing Wall Office.

·         You will be issued a receipt, which you will provide to the Staff at the Climbing Office as proof of payment for climbing pass, and to obtain your rental equipment (if purchased).

 

3)    Pass Validation and Rental equipment

Pass Validation

·         All Climbers must check in at the Climbing Office:

            - Members and 10x Pass holders may scan in to validate their pass.

            - Drop-in climbers must have their receipt and belay status validated by a staff member.

Rentals

·         A climber who has rented equipment will bring their receipt to the Climbing Office where a staff member will provide them with their gear.
 

4)    Climbing Wall Orientation & Belay Checks

·         During their initial visit, climbers will undergo an orientation and belay check. Lead belay checks are not always possible, please call ahead to confirm.

PROGRAMS

Just Climbing

Staff Belayed Drop-In

Never climbed before or find yourself without a climbing partner? Drop-in during scheduled times and have our staff hold the ropes for you. Drop-ins operate on 1:4 ratio staff to climber and are provided on a first come first serve basis as staff are available. Groups of 3 or more may not be possible to accomodate. Please note that lead belays are not offered by staff.

Cost:

  • Staff belay is included with purchase of Climbing pass / membership.

  • Saturday/Sunday: 1:30-5:00pm

Belay Session

In a larger group and want to try climbing? Book SFU Climbing Staff to belay your group. This 2 hour session is great for team building or just friends wanting to try something new.

Mimimum age is 6 years. Price includes rentals.

Instructional Courses

Introductory Course

Learn the basics of top rope belaying from SFU Climbing Wall Instructors. After this 2 hour course, you and a climbing partner will be able to safely and confidently use the SFU Climbing Wall on your own. We recommend you try one of our "Just Climbing" options if you haven't been on the wall before.

Lead Climbing Course

Leading is an essential skill for everyone looking to expand the scope of their climbing. This course is not for beginners and requires that participants to be comfortable on 5.10- at minimum. Climbing partners must be of a similar weight. This course is booked by request - please contact the climbing office at 778-782-4059 or climbing@sfu.ca if you are interested.

Cost

  • SFU Student - $50.00
  • Community - $75.00

Fall Days & Times:

  • Course is 3 hours.

SFU Climbing Team

Come climb and train in a social environment with experienced coaches. This will be a fun, semi-structured environment for intermediate (5.10) and advanced (5.11 or harder) climbers looking to improve. For those interested, recreational or competetive climbing comp opportunities can exist.

Cost

  • SFU Student - $40.00
  • Costs are in addition to passes or memberships.

Movement 1 & 2 Courses

Movement 1:

Are you new to climbing and looking to improve your skills quickly? Learn the basics of climbing technique from SFU Climbing Wall staff. Best suited for climbers comfortable on 5.8 or below. This class may be repeated. Costs are in addition to a climbing pass or membership.

Are you an intermediate climber looking to take the next steps? Move beyond basic climbing technique with coaching from SFU climbing wall staff. Best suited for climbers comfortable on 5.9 or 5.10. This class may be repeated. Costs are in addition to a climbing pass or membership.

Youth/Families

Birthday Belay Session

Have SFU staff hold the ropes for a fun filled birthday adventure on the wall. Our experienced staff can ensure safety while your group has a blast climbing.

Please note that while tables can be provided for birthday cake and food, SFU Climbing Wall does not have a designated party room.

Maximum group size is 12. Suitable for ages 6 - 13.

REC Youth Climbing Programs

Climb on SFU's brand new indoor climbing wall! This 12 week program is an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing. Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Please note, participants will be taught how to belay, an essential climbing skill which requires youth to be responsible for each other’s safety.

Suitable for Ages 9-15.

SFU Pro D Day Camps

Climbing Camp

Climb on SFU's brand new indoor climbing wall! These half-day camps are an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing. (Can be combined with afternoon camps to make a full day).

Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Participants will be taught how to belay, an important skill that requires campers to be responisble for each other's safety.

Suitable for ages 9-14. Available in Summer months only.

Schools/Youth Groups

School Belay Session

Book SFU Climbing Staff to hold the ropes for your school or youth group. This 2 hour climbing session maxmizes time on the wall - great for promoting exercise and physical literacy.

Suitable for ages  8 and up. Maximum group size is 35.

$14 per participant

Learn to Climb

In this multi day program, participants learn the essentials of climbing in the gym. As this program instructs on skills that can be used in the future, it's perfect for introducing climbing as part of an active lifestyle.

Day 1: Safety Essentials- Participants learn how to put on a harness, tie a figure 8 follow through knot, belay (a term for holding the rope to keep a climber safe), check their system and communicate safely. 

Day 2: Climbing -Participant skills are assessed and put to good use as they climb and belay together.

Day 3 and beyond (optional): Climbing Technique and Movement  - Participants learn the basics of proper climbing technique as they continue to practice their safety essentials.

Each session is 2 hours. Suitable for ages 11 and up.

Cost: 

$40.00 per participant for 2 sessions. Additional sessions may be booked at a reduced rate.

SFU CLIMBING CODE OF CONDUCT

SFU Recreation is a unique community of students, staff, faculty, and the public connected by active living and leadership development. Our Codes of Conduct are in place to create an environment that is safe, friendly, and inclusive for everyone.

• Use the Climbing Wall only during posted hours and under the supervision of a qualified Climbing Staff person.

• Respect and be courteous of your fellow climbers and the Climbing Staff.

• All persons must bring proof of membership or drop-in pass to the Climbing Office for validation prior to climbing.

• All persons on the climbing mats must complete a waiver and receive a facility orientation.

• All belayers must pass a facility belay check and display their SFU belay tag. Belay techniques must conform to SFU belay check standards.

• Belay instruction is only permitted by a qualified SFU Climbing Staff person.

• A climber’s harness and climbing equipment must be CE and / or UIAA approved and unmodified. All equipment must be assembled and used as specified by the manufacturer. SFU Climbing Staff reserve the right to reject any climbing equipment they deem to be unsafe.

• Right of way on wall is as follows: Lead climbers, top ropers, boulderers, spectators. Roped climbers have priority use. Do not use rope adjacent to any lead climber.

• Top rope belayers must use ground weights when belaying climbers more than 150% of their weight. Lead belayers must not belay a climber greater than 150% their weight.

• While bouldering, no part of the body should be above the 1st quick draw.

• All spectators must take care not to interfere with climbing activities.

• No running, food or drink, loose chalk, or bare feet on the mats.

• Remove all rings on fingers, and items in pockets.

• Use of earbuds or headphones is not permitted while climbing.

Age Requirements:

• Any person 6-13 years of age requires adult supervision (19 years +), must adhere to the climbing wall code of conduct AND are not permitted to belay.

Report any injuries, equipment malfunctions, or concerns to a Climbing Staff person immediately.

Any person violating University Policies or the Climbing Wall Code of Conduct may have their Recreation Membership or Drop-in Pass privileges revoked.
