ABOUT

SFU Recreation is excited to offer Indoor Climbing as part of its programming.  Our 10m Climbing Wall is located in the Lorne Davies Central gym and has options for top rope/lead climbing, auto belays and bouldering along the wall base. 

Below is information on hours, rates, wall use, programs and more.  If you're new to climbing, please visit our "Programs" section for the best ways to use the wall.

GETTING STARTED

How to use the Climbing Wall

1) Getting to Campus & Parking

2) Waivers and Payment

All facility users must sign a waiver or consent form online, at the Recreation Office or at the Climbing Office.

During Recreation Office Business Hours:

·  Climbing Passes, Memberships & Equipment are purchased at the Recreation Office (Lorne Davies, 110 - located beside the pool). Bring receipts to the Climbing Office.

All hours:

·  Select passes may be purchased online. Pay before you arrive or using the Climbing Office computer.

3) Pass Validation

All Climbers must check in at the Climbing Office.

·    Members and 10x Pass holders may scan in to validate their pass.

·    Drop-in climbers must have their receipt and belay status validated by a staff member.

4) Orientation & Belay Checks

During their initial visit, all facility users climbers will undergo a facility orientation. Belayers must receive a belay check. Lead belay checks are not always possible, please call ahead to confirm.

Waiver

All climbers must complete a Liability Waiver or SFU Climbing Parent/Guardian Consent Form before their initial climb.

SFU Climbing Wall Code of Conduct

SFU Recreation is a unique community of students, staff, faculty, and the public connected by active living and leadership development. Our Codes of Conduct are in place to create an environment that is safe, friendly, and inclusive for everyone.

• Use the Climbing Wall only during posted hours and under the supervision of a qualified Climbing Staff person.

• Respect and be courteous of your fellow climbers and the Climbing Staff.

• All persons must bring proof of membership or drop-in pass to the Climbing Office for validation prior to climbing.

• All persons on the climbing mats must complete a waiver and receive a facility orientation.

• All belayers must pass a facility belay check and display their SFU belay tag. Belay techniques must conform to SFU belay check standards.

• Belay instruction is only permitted by a qualified SFU Climbing Staff person.

• A climber’s harness and climbing equipment must be CE and / or UIAA approved and unmodified. All equipment must be assembled and used as specified by the manufacturer. SFU Climbing Staff reserve the right to reject any climbing equipment they deem to be unsafe.

• Right of way on wall is as follows: Lead climbers, top ropers, boulderers, spectators. Roped climbers have priority use. Do not use rope adjacent to any lead climber.

• Top rope belayers must use ground weights when belaying climbers more than 150% of their weight. Lead belayers must not belay a climber greater than 150% their weight.

• While bouldering, no part of the body should be above the 2nd quick draw.

• All spectators must take care not to interfere with climbing activities.

• No running, food or drink, loose chalk, or bare feet on the mats.

• Remove all rings on fingers, and items in pockets.

• Use of earbuds or headphones is not permitted while climbing.

Age Requirements:

• Any person 6-13 years of age requires adult supervision (19 years +), must adhere to the climbing wall code of conduct AND are not permitted to belay.

Report any injuries, equipment malfunctions, or concerns to a Climbing Staff person immediately.

Any person violating University Policies or the Climbing Wall Code of Conduct may have their Recreation Membership or Drop-in Pass privileges revoked.

Just Climbing

Staff Belayed Drop-In

• The best drop-in option for new or partnerless climbers.

Never climbed before or find yourself without a climbing partner? Drop-in during scheduled times and have our staff hold the ropes for you. Drop-ins operate on 1:4 ratio staff to climber and are provided on a first come first serve basis as staff are available. Groups of 3 or more may not be possible to accomodate. Please note that lead belays are not offered by staff. All children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult.

Cost:

  • Staff belay is included with purchase of Climbing pass / membership.
April/May/June Dates & Times:
  • Fridays 10am - 2pm

Belay Session

• A great social or team building activity for groups.

Got 3 or people more and want to try climbing? Book SFU Climbing Staff to belay your group. This 2 hour session is great for events, social activities, team building or just friends wanting to try something new.

Maximum group size is 45. Mimimum age is 6 years. Price includes rentals. Please note that booking availability may be limited by facility useage levels and avilable staff. Larger groups (12+) and those looking to book in the evenings should inquire well in advance. Booking times may be limited Summer months.

Instructional Courses

Introductory Course

• For new climbers wanting to learn belaying basics.

Learn the basics of top rope belaying from SFU Climbing Wall Instructors. After this 2 hour course, you and a climbing partner will be able to safely and confidently use the SFU Climbing Wall on your own. We recommend you try one of our "Just Climbing" options if you haven't been on the wall before.

Cost

  • SFU Student Promotion - $15.00, includes a Climbing Day Pass
  • Community - $40.00

Summer Dates & Times:

How to book:

Lead Climbing Course

• For intermediate climbers looking to take the next step.

Leading is an essential skill for everyone looking to expand the scope of their climbing. This course is not for beginners and requires that participants to be comfortable on 5.10- at minimum. Climbing partners must be of a similar weight. Course is booked by request - please contact the climbing office at 778-782-4059 or climbing@sfu.ca if you are interested.

Booking availability may be limited during Summer months.

Cost

  • SFU Student - $50.00
  • Community - $75.00

  • Course is 3 hours.

Rookie to Rock Climbing Program

• Get your Climbing off to the best possible start!

From your first climbs, to learning the ropes to gaining an undrestanding of climbing technique, certified SFU instructors will be there every step of the way.

Day 1: Try climbing for free during trial week

Day 2: Top Rope Belay Skills (replaces Introductory Course)

Days 3-6: Climbing practice, technique and training

Birthday Belay Session

• A unique birthday adventure for kids 6-13.

Have SFU staff hold the ropes for a fun filled 2 hour birthday adventure on the wall. Our experienced staff can ensure safety while your group has a blast climbing.

Tables and chairs can be provided if requested in advance. VIP Party Room including tables, chairs, and decorations available for an extra $35.

Maximum group size is 16. Suitable for ages 6 - 13.

Cost: 

$15 per participant

Youth REC Climbing Program

• A multi-week climbing program that gives youth the skills to have fun and be safe on the wall.

Climb on SFU's brand new indoor climbing wall! This multi-week program is an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing. Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Please note, participants will be taught how to belay, an essential climbing skill which requires youth to be responsible for each other’s safety. 

Suitable for Ages 9-15.

Dates & Times:

  • Summer 2018: 4-6pm,  April 26th- June 21st (9 sessions)

Cost: 

$180 for 9 sessions

Family Sundays at SFU

Please note that the final Family Sunday until Fall 2018 will be on April 22nd.
• Fun for the whole family on Sunday mornings! Programs include drop-in climbing and more.

Family Climb Drop-In - Bring the whole family to try out climbing at the SFU Wall! Suitable for ages 3+. Children under 14 require adult supervision. All climbers must complete either a consent form or liability waiver. Families must include youth 17 and under. Please note that SFU has limited rental equipment for young children, and bringing running or climbing shoes for those under 9 is advised.


Dates & Times: 

Family Drop-in Climbing 9:30am to 12:00pm. Location: SFU Central Gymnasium (at the Lorne Davies Complex). No Program May - August 2018.

SFU Pro D Day Camps

• Full day multi-sport camps for  school-age children.

Available on select Pro-D days, these full day camps will take advantage of the great recreation options at SFU including Climbing, Swimming and Gymnasiums.

How to book:

Climbing Camp

• Week long climbing camps for youth ages 9-14 (all experience levels welcome).

Climb on SFU's brand new indoor climbing wall! These half-day camps are an exhilarating experience filled with safety skills, technique instruction, games and lots of climbing. (Can be combined with afternoon camps to make a full day).

Perfect for beginners or climbers wanting to learn something new! Participants will be taught how to belay, an important skill that requires campers to be responsible for each other's safety.

Suitable for ages 9-14. Available over Spring Break and Summer months only.

Friday Field Trips

• Half or full day multi-sport field trips.

These field trips take advantage of the  great recreation options at SFU including Climbing, Swimming and Gymnasiums. Full and half day options are available.

School Belay Session

• 2 full hours of climbing for school and youth groups.

Book SFU Climbing Staff to hold the ropes for your school or youth group. This 2 hour climbing session maxmizes time on the wall - great for promoting exercise and physical literacy.

Suitable for ages  8 and up. Maximum group size is 35.

$14 per participant

Learn to Climb

• Lessons that give youth the tools to improve their skills and climb independently.

In this multi day program, participants learn the essentials of climbing in the gym. As this program instructs on skills that can be used in the future, it's perfect for introducing climbing as part of an active lifestyle.

Day 1: Safety Essentials- Participants learn how to put on a harness, tie a figure 8 follow through knot, belay (a term for holding the rope to keep a climber safe), check their system and communicate safely. 

Day 2: Climbing -Participant skills are assessed and put to good use as they climb and belay together.

Day 3 and beyond (optional): Climbing Technique and Movement  - Participants learn the basics of proper climbing technique as they continue to practice their safety essentials.

Each session is 2 hours. Suitable for ages 11 and up.

Cost: 

$40.00 per participant for 2 sessions. Additional sessions may be booked at a reduced rate.
