Aquatics Programs

ADULTS

  • Adult Group Swimming Lessons - Swim lessons offered for both beginner and intermediate swimmers looking to improve their technique.
  • Masters Swim - Get motivated by other swimmers, improve your fitness and train for upcoming event. All swimmers must be able to swim 4 lengths of the pool. 
  • Private Swim Lessons - Subject to instructor availability. Requests are now being accepted for Summer 2019 lessons. Apply here

CHILDREN

  • Youth Swim Lessons - Offered in a small group setting, following the Red Cross Swim Program.

  • SFU Climbing Wall offers many programs for beginners and more advanced climbers. Check out the Climbing Wall page for more details. 

Dance Programs

  • Back to Ballet - A ballet class for dancers returning to ballet, experienced dancess in other styles of dance or confident and motivated beginners! This ballet inspired workout lengthens and strengthens the body through ballet barre and centre floor styled workout. Bare feet or ballet shoes are suitable for this class.  Back to Ballet runs like a regular ballet class, including warm-up, barre, centre, and stretch, and is best suited for dancers returning after taking a break from ballet, dancers experienced in other styles who want to try ballet, those with 1-2 years of ballet experience, or confident and motivated beginners!
  • Belly Dance - An introducation to this dynamic and sensual Middle Eastern dance.  This introductory class emphasizes rhythmic expression, while strengthening the core and improving flexibility by performing basic shimmies, undulations and figure eights. Gain confidence and pride through the beauty art of Belly Dance!
  • Contemporary Dance - Contemporary dance takes inspiration from ballet, jazz, lyrical and other styles. Class includes comprehensive warm-up and conditioning, creative improv practice, and choreography. This class is suitablefor beginner and intermediate dancers, and can be modified for inuries or limited mobility.
  • Cabaret Chair Fitness - This fusion of burlesque inspired movement, chair dance and core fitness is a great way to create longer, leaner muscle lines, core strength, and tap into your inner DIVA (determination, integrity, vitality and aspiration). All divas welcome!
  • Intermediate Ballet - Geared towards people who have a good understanding of ballet technique and vocabulary, are able to pick exercises up quickly, and want to explore more techniques week to week. Exercises would change weekly, and the use of pointe shoes are allowed for those who are used to using them.
  • KPop Music Dance Video - This class is for anyone, regardless of how familiar they are with Kpop. We'll do a jazz/hip-hop style warm-up and technique class, and then spend the latter portion of class learning popular Kpop choreography (Red Velvet, BTS, KARD, Taemin, etc) - requests welcome if there are specific dances you want to learn! Beginners also welcome - we will spend 2-3 weeks on each choreo.
  • Zumba - Experience all the wonderful benefits that Zumba┬« can offer. Enjoy this"fitness-dance-party" that blends upbeat world rhythms with easy-to-follow choreography, for a total-body workout that feels like a celebration. All levels welcome!
  • Zumba Foundations - Come join the fun! This class offers basic Zumba┬« moves to all the same energizing songs!     

Group Fitness Programs

  • Abs, Buns & Thighs - Strengthen and tone your abs, buns and thighs in this resistance training class. All levels welcome. Abs, Buns and Thighs will use movements inspired by Pilates, Yoga, Dance and traditional methods to strengthen and tone you abs, buns and thighs.
  • Strength & Stretch - A full body interval training class followed by a deep stretch. All levels welcome! Strength and Stretch is a full body coditioning class that will build strength, cardio, and improve flexibility. Cardiovascular intervals are combined with resistance training and deep stretching. All levels welcome!
  • Total Body Conditioning - In Total Body Conditioning you will get an overall workout- the perfect balance of strenght and cardiovascular work. A warm-up and light cardio workout to start, then strength work with body weight, tubing or dumbbells and finally a relaxing stretch. All levels welcome!
  • Zumba Foundations - Come join the fun! This class offers basic Zumba moves to all the same energizing songs!     

Mind, Body, Spirit Programs

  • All Levels Yoga - Learn the foundations and build your knowledge of asana practice. Attention is paid to good postural alignment, effective breathing, body awareness and relaxation of effort. This is an all levels class and everyone is welcome.
  • Yoga Core - Longer, leaner muscle lines are created through this fusion of Pilates, barre, and yoga movement. Core Yoga will help create longer, leaner muscle lines through a fusion of Pilates, barre, and yoga movement. This class will consist of about 45 minutes of dynamic and micro movements to build a healthy core followed by a 5-7 minute savasana. Feel free to bring a blanket for your savasana!
  • Hatha Yoga - This class will focus on the mobility of joints, postural alignment, effective breathing, body awareness, and stress reduction. Reap the rewards of this age-old healing tradition. Learn the foundations of Hatha yoga and build your knowledge of asana practice. This class will focus on the mobility of joints, postural alignment, effective breathing, body awareness, and stress reduction. Make sure to wear warm, layered clothing and feel free to bring a blanket to this class. All levels welcome!
  • Vinyasa Power Yoga - A more energetic form of yoga that will challenge you in many ways. All levels welcome! Vinyasa (Power) Yoga is a more energetic form of yoga that will challenge you in many ways. Vinyasa yoga involves progressive sequences that move smoothly from one posture to another. Vinyasa will awaken and sustain your consciousness while building up your power. This style allows for a lot of variety and has both mental and physical benefits. Vinyasa is a great place to start and also a great place to continue challenging yourself. Go at your own pace and always listen to your body. All levels welcome!
  • Yoga Inspiration - A gentle class designed to improve alignment, work around injuries and to allow more ease in the body and mind. The foundational focus of this class will be posture guidence, breathing techniques and finding ease withing your own unique abilities.
  • Yin/Yang - A sequence of energetic movements that blend into longer held poses and restorative postures. All levels welcome. In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang describes how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. This Yoga class is designed to sequence through energetic asana and breathing into a longer held poses and restorative asana. The class will hopefully allow you to feel present in the moment, to connect mind and body and soul, and deliver skills to help accept the yin and yang of daily life. Please wear warm and layered clothing and feel free to bring a blanket. All levels welcome!

Martial Arts Programs

  • Aikido - Utilizing joint immobilization, this class teaches flowing circular movements that harmonize an attacker's force to neutralize it. Since Aikido is based on centering KI (energy) and not muscle strength, individuals of any fitness level can practice.
  • Arnis Kickboxing - Combining western boxing, eastern kickboxing, grappling and traditional martial arts with the progressive weapons techniques of the Philippines. Arnis kickboxing provides a well rounded martial arts experience to the novice and experienced martial artist alike.
  • Fencing - Few sports give you such a complete workout as the sport of Fencing., Requiring speed and agility, this enjoyable class develops muscle, balance, agility, and endurance. Fencers also acquire excellent mental stamina, concentration and quick-thinking skills. Individuals of all ages are able to acquire skills that will last a lifetime.
  • Hapkido - Hapkido is a street-oriented, self defense martial art with 3864 combat techniques integrating all aspects of self defense. Our syllabus integrates: Kicking, Striking, Joint locks, Throws, Take downs, Control tactics, Pressure point attacks, Ground fighting and Weapons such as short stick, baton, sword, knife, rope, and staff. Hapkido minimizes the need for strength through the use of coordinated power. Hapkido has no katas or set forms. Techniques are taught directly with an emphasis on adaptability and practical applications. Hapkido is not a sport. For men a groin cup is highly recommended. The instructors have taught various members of local law enforcement and military including: Vancouver Police, RCMP, Federal Corrections, Provincial Corrections High Security Escort, BC Paramedics, Canadian Armed Forces as well as senior ranking officers of foreign Police Departments.
  • Iaido - Iaido is the art of sword drawing from Ancient Japan. The movements are simple to quickly dispatch opponents in sitting and standing situations. Beginners start with a wooden sword, and progress to an unsharpened metal sword. Focus is provided to the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei (Seite) and Muso Shinden styles. Instructor: Hiro Okusa
  • Police Judo - SFU Police Judo is a recreational, law-enforcement based judo training program designed to develop judo skills that are suitable and applicable for law enforcement training, and will also provide a solid foundation for self-defence. Along the way, students of police judo will develop better fitness and strength conditioning from this safe, fun, and enjoyable program. No experience necessary. The instructors are well-experienced in judo and have a variety of law enforcement backgrounds.

Practices include judo-based games and activities that are educational and fun. Youth will learn how to improve their balance, fall properly (breakfalls), develop judo throws and learn basic grappling through games, activities, and drills. Kids Judo emphasizes a recreational learning environment for youth, but one that will help improve the youth's co-ordination, strength, conditioning, and overall athletic skills. The philosophy of judo emphasizes the need to 'take care of one's partner' and this is an integral part of our judo program. 'Mutual benefit' and 'respect for each other' form the philisophical foundation of this sport. These qualities make judo not only a good sport, but also a great educational training for life.
  • Karate - This class will explore how the art form of karate can be translated into more realistic self-defense scenarios. It is open to both advanced, novice and beginner students. Overall, Karate will improve your focus, strength and balance while helping you de-stress and deepen your martial arts knowledge.
  • Tai Chi - This class uses the most popular, standardized form of Tai Chi - 24 Form Simplified Yang Style. It will help you refine your form and improve your flow of movements.
  • Ving Tsun - Ving Tsun (a.k.a. Wing Chun) is a close combat Chinese martial art based on quick movements. The use of proper body positioning enables the practitioner to maximize their attack while assessing their opponent's strengths and weaknesses.  Ving Tsun focus on body structure rather than brute force makes it an ideal class for anyone.

Youth Programs

Practices include judo-based games and activities that are educational and fun. Youth will learn how to improve their balance, fall properly (breakfalls), develop judo throws and learn basic grappling through games, activities, and drills. Kids Judo emphasizes a recreational learning environment for youth, but one that will help improve the youth's co-ordination, strength, conditioning, and overall athletic skills.  The philosophy of judo emphasizes the need to 'take care of one's partner' and this is an integral part of our judo program.  'Mutual benefit' and 'respect for each other' form the philisophical foundation of this sport. These qualities make judo not only a good sport, but also a great educational training for life.
  • Happy Harmonies - Parent & Kids - Music & Yoga - The perfect setting for weekly family bonding time, music exploration and kid friendly movement for all ages. Happy Harmonies will help inspire music, play and fun in class and at home. This class allows children and their care-givers a fun filled learning experience and includes a variety of activities such as group dances, singing, instrument-play activities and kid-friendly yoga moves for the whole family. Caregivers and parents are welcome to bring one or more children. Each child must be registered seperately.
  • Youth Swim Lessons - Offered in a small group setting, following the Red Cross Swim Program. Private Swim Lesson Applications: Requests are now being accepted for lessons starting in May 2019.
