Help Keep Black Bears, Raccoons, and Coyotes Out of Residence!

It is fall and we have had numerous reports of wild animals in and around SFU Residences.  To help ensure that you don’t attract unwanted and dangerous animals, keep in mind the following:

1.   Always dispose of your garbage properly in the compactors or the secure black bins outside the towers.

2.   Do not put food garbage/scraps in the recycling.

3.   Never leave garbage outside or put it in the small receptacles in and around Residence.

4.   If you spot a bear, please contact Campus Security immediately (778-782-3100 or 23100) from your residence phone.

5.   If you are using the trails in and around SFU, make noise, especially when your visibility is limited. It is also suggested that if you are using the trails that you go in groups.

6.   Do not approach wild animals, feed them, or try to get close to take a picture.

Heat Wave Safety Tips for Residents

With the current hot temperatures that we’ve been facing and the air quality advisory in effect, we wanted to reach out to everyone with some tips to stay safe.

  • Drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses per day. Here are some places that you can go to on campus to get water
    • Tap water: Yes, your residence building tap water is drinkable
    • Water Station: the Residence front desk during business hours from our water cooler and the water station near convocation mall during and after hours
  • Stay cool by taking frequent breaks from hot areas
  • Seek out indoor spaces with air conditioning
  • Avoid strenuous activity
  • Don’t wear heavy clothes

You might also want to check out some additional tips from our friends at Health and Counselling which you can find here: https://www.sfu.ca/students/health/slides/summer-health.html

Help Keep Our Community Safe!

With the hot weather we have been experiencing and the fact that our campus is surrounded by dry forest on all sides, the possibility of a wildfire is a very real concern.

Please help us lower this risk by:

  • Immediately calling Campus Security (778-782-4500) if  you spot a fire.
  • Knowing the location of your nearest fire extinguishers, especially when cooking.
  • Always ensuring cigarette butts are fully out --- this is especially   important when smoking in Townhouse area as you are closest to the dry forested area!
  • Disposing of cigarette butts in designated locations only
  • Calling Campus Security if you see anyone cooking in an outdoor area of residence — no BBQs or campfires are permitted!
