Elective grade system for 2021

March 01, 2021

This message is sent on behalf of Kathryn Verkerk, University Registrar and Executive Director, Student Enrolment pro tem.

Dear student,

On January 11, our university senate approved a new, temporary undergraduate Elective Grade System of Pass/Credit/No Credit (P/CR/NC) for the 2021 spring, summer, and fall terms. This Elective Grade System was created specifically for elective courses.

The Elective Grade System is an alternative course-specific grading system created in recognition of how the pandemic and remote learning have impacted students.

This option may also be an opportunity for you to explore possible course choices to areas where you have an interest, but may not be confident about how well you might do. With the P/CR/NC option, course results don't impact your GPA.

You can choose the Elective Grade System (P/CR/NC) for your undergraduate elective courses during the 2021 spring, summer and fall terms, subject to the following limits:

  • If you’re enrolled in nine or more units in a term, you may designate up to two undergraduate elective courses (eight units maximum) as P/CR/NC/term.
  • If you’re enrolled in fewer than nine units in a term, you may designate one undergraduate elective course (four units maximum) as P/CR/NC/term.
  • No more than 12 units of P/CR/NC grades may be applied towards a degree program over the pilot period.

What you should know

You cannot change your grading basis from the standard to the Elective Grade System (P/CR/NC), or vice-versa, after the opt-in deadline has passed. You will also not know for certain your final standard letter grade in a course prior to this deadline.

The deadline for the Spring 2021 term is April 16, 2021. You will be able to choose the Elective Grade System option through self-service in your goSFU account in mid-March, and we will send another email to let you know when the option is available.

There are some exclusions

Courses that are graded with P/CR/NC grades may not be used to meet the program requirements of any major, joint major, honours, joint honours, minor, double minor, extended minor program, certificate, or any combination thereof, unless specifically listed here.

A Pass (P) grade will satisfy prerequisite requirements when no minimum letter grade is required. For courses requiring a pre-requisite higher than a grade of C-, that department may, at the discretion of the Chair, accept a Pass (P) or CR grade in place of a standard letter grade.

Please be aware

If you select the Elective Grade System for a program requirement you may be required to repeat that course, or complete a comparable course approved by your department, in order to fulfill your program requirements. If you’re in any doubt about your course choice, we strongly recommend you to consult with an academic advisor.

Please visit this page to learn how to select the Elective Grade System (P/CR/NC) option, and for complete information regarding conditions and restrictions.
