Alumni Feature: Meet Jason Wong
SFU Degree(s): Bachelor of Arts - Major in Communication, 2004
I graduated from SFU in 2004 and opened Surrey's first coworking space, Beta Collective, in 2014. Having grew up in Surrey & North Delta (go NDSS Huskies '98!), I've witnessed firsthand the incredible transformation that the City has and continues to go through. Seeing the entrepreneurial spirit flourishing here over the past few decades, I felt that the timing was right for Surrey to finally embrace the coworking movement that's been sweeping the globe. More importantly, I believed that Surrey City Centre needed a shared workspace where community-minded organizations could gather and anchor themselves. I positioned Beta Collective to be a hub for community impact, where non-profits and private companies alike can establish themselves in the heart of Downtown Surrey to provide critical resources and support to the people who live here.
What drew you to your area of study?
I couldn't get into Business Admin, nearly flunked out of Econ, then came to the realization that I was better with words instead of numbers. Communication was the logical choice and the rest was history.
What is your favourite memory of your time at SFU?
Helping to restart the Communication Student Union in my final year after it was apparently dormant for nearly a decade. My first 4 years at SFU was a bit of a directionless blur until then. It was such a rewarding time being able to create opportunities and events for CMNS students and faculty to engage.
What is your personal takeaway from your time at SFU?
It's the extra curricular activities that helped to shape my post secondary experience and turn it from purely academia/studying/stress to friendships/networking/work experience.
What advice do you have for SFU students going through their degree?
Don't just attend class. Get involved. Volunteer. Apply for different opportunities on/off campus. Go on an exchange (once it's safe to do so)!
