Alumni Feature: Meet Michelle Kumar

November 21, 2022

SFU Degree(s): Bachelor of Arts – Joint Major in Criminology and Psychology, 2011

Currently I work as the Director of Operations and Human Resources for Surrey Crime Prevention Society. I have been part of this organization for 10 years, and during this time I have been thoroughly embedded in the community of Surrey. This role has allowed me to work within the realm of community policing, with youth in Surrey Schools, local businesses, and community groups. It has given me a first hand experience of the diversity in which this city thrives and has provided me with so many unique opportunities.

I have the privilege of working with over 500 volunteers, primarily youth who are dedicated to supporting community safety in the City of Surrey through the delivery of Community Safety Programs. In this role, I overlook the operations of programs as delivered by these volunteers throughout the City of Surrey. This has provided me with a perspective of various cultures and has broadened my perspectives on how a community truly thrives when they are engaged.

What advice do you have for SFU students going through their degree?

The best advice I can give to students is to get involved in their communities, whether through associations or groups at SFU or in their local communities. I believe this enriches the learning experience as it provides perspectives that will allow them to relate their academic experiences to future career opportunities.
