Alumni Feature: Meet Sasha Ramnarine
SFU Degree(s): Bachelor of Bachelor Administration, 2008
Hi, my name is Sasha Ramnarine and I am a Business Lawyer with Remedios and Company. At a very young age, I started working with my father at our family’s Trinidadian restaurant in Kitsilano, which developed my passion to help businesses. Now as a lawyer, I practice in the areas of corporate-commercial law, real estate, wills and estate. I work with a wide range of clients including start-ups, small businesses, and international corporations including from the Asia-Pacific and India.
I also volunteer my time supporting our community. I am a Board of Director member with the Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT). I am the Chair for the Tourism, Arts and Culture Team of the SBOT. I also serve on other boards including ISSofBC and BCIBN. I recently finished a 6-year term with the New Westminster Police Department Board.
I also have a passion to teach. I have taught a variety of courses here in Surrey at SFU and KPU, including Business Law, Business Fundamentals, and Employment Law.
What advice do you have for SFU students going through their degree?
I believe that it is very important for students to expand their network and reach outside of their comfort zone. One way students can do so is to a join a local Board of Trade, such as the Surrey Board of Trade, to meet other professionals and to be exposed to the greater business community. The SBOT has great initiatives to help post-secondary students with such. It is also important for students to practice self-care and self-compassion. In our modern world, there is so much "noise", which can result in increasing stress. No matter how busy you are, always make time for yourself, whether that be through meditation, exercise, or other hobbies. I have been practicing meditation for many years and it has helped me to manage stress, strengthen my resiliency, and continually grow into a better person.
