Alumni Feature: Meet Camille Viray
SFU Degree(s): Bachelor of Arts – Major in Psychology, 2008
I work as the Education and Communications Coordinator for Fraser Health’s Department of Evaluation and Research Services. I run the education program, which consists of over 30 research, evaluation, and knowledge translation skills workshops; 3 researchers’ cafes; an annual research week conference, and other educational sessions. I have the privilege of collaborating with SFU to create and host events like the FH and SFU Research Pitching Day. The other half of my job is managing communications via our various channels: website, Research Currents Newsletter, and all marketing and promotional activities.
My role helps build capacity for staff at Fraser Health to do research, evaluation, or knowledge translation in our region (with Surrey being its largest region!). With this new knowledge generated and using the best evidence, we will ensure the best health care for the people we serve. I also get to share the exceptional research that happens in Surrey.
What advice do you have for SFU students going through their degree?
Do a foreign exchange! I cannot rave enough about this. During my third year at SFU, I did my exchange to Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. It was truly a unique experience having lived and explored such a beautiful country, met amazing people, and taken interesting classes from this partner university.
Also, participate in different activities within SFU like research labs, teams, or student societies. You will get the volunteer experience and also get to know other students and faculty. Overall, it gives you a better sense of community and belonging at SFU.
