SFU Degree(s): Master of Arts - Geography, 2009

Since 2014, Lynn Saffery has been Museum Manager at Museum of Surrey, in the Cloverdale Town Centre. Through a major expansion from facility to a campus of heritage buildings, a plaza, Feature Gallery, Indigenous Hall and children's gallery, Museum of Surrey has become one the of the most visited museums in Western Canada.

Lynn works to engage and build connection with Surrey residents and visitors by providing a museum dedicated to the people of Surrey. Using exhibitions, events, and programs, Surrey’s communities are invited to share their stories of identity and belonging, the challenges of settling in a new country, and the privileges of living in BC’s southwest. Lynn works to bring Surrey residents and visitors together through empathy and a deeper understanding of each other. Lynn believes that when people have a voice and a place to share their lived experiences, communities are happier, more connected, safer, and engaged.

What drew you to your area of study?

"Human geography helps us understand how and why people work, live and play in their environments. I have always been a strong believer in the fact that when we are connected to the communities around us, we are healthier, more engaged, and care more deeply about our society and our environment."

What is your favourite memory of your time at SFU?

"Outdoor classes in the sun."

What advice do you have for SFU students going through their degree?

"The second and third drafts are ALWAYS better than the first draft!"
