Faculty members are generating teaching knowledge and solutions with the help of SFU grants
SFU has three grant programs that support faculty and staff explorations of more effective ways to teach and learn. The individuals leading grant projects are generating solutions tailored to the SFU context and in many cases adaptable for use by other instructors. Current grant recipients include Dimitris Krallis (associate professor, Hellenic Studies, shown at right), who is constructing an online digital platform for course materials; Robert Krider (professor, Beedie School of Business), who is investigating ways to improve "teaching efficiency" by examining the relationship between time invested in fostering student learning and the outcomes achieved; and Lara Aknin (assistant professor, Psychology), who is creating an anonymous peer evaluation system that can be integrated into SFU systems like Canvas. The Scantron system is changing—find out what that means for you
The Scantron system employed by SFU to process those fill-in-the-bubble forms used by many instructors and departments for exams and paper-based course/instructor/teaching assistant evaluations has changed, and will undergo further changes in 2017. For now, the existing forms can still be used, and the submission processes for sending the forms to Document Solutions are unchanged. However, the report formats and, in the case of exam results, the report content have been modified, and scores can now be supplied in a form that is uploadable to the Canvas Gradebook. Find out what else has changed and what's ahead.
A new video offers reflections on teaching and learning at SFU by former TLC director Stephanie Chu
In a newly posted video interview, Stephanie Chu, former director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, shared her thoughts on the evolution of the TLC and SFU's teaching and learning community during her six-year tenure, which ended in July 2016. Chu identified the establishment of partnerships with other SFU departments and service units and an "ecosystemic" approach to teaching and learning support as key elements of the Centre's growth. Experienced academics share the lessons they've learned
In "What I Wish I Knew as an Early-Career Professor," an article in the January 2017 issue of University Affairs, eight veteran academics offer insights drawn from their own experiences to younger colleagues. Among the contributors is SFU teaching professor Veselin Jungic (Mathematics), who describes the moment when he first understood that his students had dimensions beyond those they exhibited in the classroom.
