Celebrating an impact that goes beyond the classroom

Petra Menz

“If you have a professor who is approaching you to get the best out of you, you will remember them for life.” Petra Menz (right), a senior lecturer in Mathematics, has developed meaningful connections with hundreds of students through her Instructor-Student Meeting Initiative. Her work has had a measurable impact on student well-being, and it is an example of how instructors participating in SFU Health Promotion's Well-being in Learning Environments (WLE) program create conditions that boost well-being and academic performance. On January 16 she will be recognized as SFU's 2017 Champion for a Healthy Campus Community by Peter Keller, VP Academic, at an afternoon reception in the Diamond Alumni Centre. All members of the academic community—but especially faculty members and staff—are invited to this celebration of Petra's work, which will feature the premiere of a two-minute video about her initiative. RSVP to save your spot.

Almost like being there: Pictures and presentation slides from DEMOfest 2017

For the third year in a row, DEMOfest brought together members of SFU’s academic community for a day showcasing the learning tools, techniques and technologies used by SFU instructors. This year’s DEMOfest was notable for its emphasis on assessment tools and strategies. If you missed the November 28 event—or if you wish you had taken better notes during the presentations—you can now view the PowerPoint slides for most of the presentations, along with a slideshow of people and faces at this cross-Faculty gathering organized by the Teaching and Learning Centre.

Our best wishes to you

Winter scene

You—faculty members, instructors, teaching support staff, departmental administrators and service providers within SFU’s teaching and learning community—work hard all year long to provide meaningful learning experiences for students. As the holiday break approaches, those of us in the Teaching and Learning Centre want to acknowledge and celebrate all of you for your often unsung efforts this past year. The impact of your work isn’t always immediately apparent, but in many cases the positive results are transformative and life-changing. View our holiday greeting!
