Designated W, Q and B Courses

All undergraduate students entering SFU since Fall 2006 are required to complete at least 6 credits in courses designated Writing (W) and Quantitative (Q), and 18 credits in designated Breadth courses distributed among the Humanities (B-Hum), Social Sciences (B-Soc) and Sciences (B-Sci).

To facilitate this, SFU academic units put forward courses for W, Q and B designation review. Once approved, these courses are formally designated as Writing, Quantitative, or Breadth or a combination of the three designation types. The following lists comprise those courses deemed to meet the criteria for WQB designations, organized alphabetically within each Faculty.

Please go to our WQB Designation Request Forms page to download the relevant request forms for W, Q or B designation.

The designation process is ongoing. Please continue to check the lists for updates as recommended W, Q and B courses are added. A "last updated" date appears at the top of each list page.

Courses on these lists have been forwarded to Faculty Undergraduate Curriculum Committees and to the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS), and to Senate for final approval of a change in designation. The designation changes appear in the SFU Calendar and the Course Catalogue each term.

SFU has agreed that courses offered at sending institutions that are directly transferrable to an SFU course with a Q or B designation will earn the Q or B credit when transferred. Writing-intensive courses from sending institutions are considered individually before W credit is granted.
