What's Smackdown all about?
If you've heard of the Oxford Union Debates, well let's say that SFU's Faculty Smackdown event is loosely based on that society's format. Inspiration also came from CBC Radio's comedy program called The Debaters. BUT, our event is wildly different because:
(1) SFU students nominate faculty to participate, and
(2) faculty debate topics of a nonsensical nature to raise money for charity. Hence the tagline: "serious professors | silly questions | smashing good time"!
Each faculty member must:
(1) be known for having a sense of humour,
(2) have the ability to talk about anything, and
(3) possess an appreciation for volunteerism or the act of giving.
In this FUNdraising event, 12 faculty debate topics of no real importance in a quasi-moderated debate. Winners receive the Gnome-it-all Award.
