Lindsay Meredith, SFU Beedie School of Business professor emeritus, can provide commentary on the Bank of Canada raising its interest rate to 1.25 per cent. This increase marks the third 0.25 percentage point increase since July and the first time the rate has risen above one per cent in nine years.

“If our interest rate rises relative to the American interest rate then our Canadian dollar will rise against the American Dollar,” says Meredith. “That should take some of the pressure off NAFTA negotiations because Canadian made goods will then become more expensive in the US - and that is the basis for all of this American driven countervailing duties argument.”
