A tweet by Canada’s Foreign Minister expressing concern over the arrest of Saudi activist Samar Badawi and other women’s rights campaigners, and calling for their release, has sparked a steady string of retaliatory measures by the Saudi government. Among them, expelling the Canadian ambassador and recalling the Saudi envoy to Ottawa, suspending Saudi state airline flights to Toronto, as well as ending thousands of Saudi scholarship programs in Canada.

SFU Middle East political economy expert Robert Springborg is available to provide commentary as the story develops.
