Media Advisory: Virtual Reality "Goes Beyond: at SFU student showcase

Students in Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) are showing just how far one can go to experience reality in immersive environments—and how virtual reality is more than a gaming tool.
Tasked with creating projects that stretch the virtual limits, they will showcase their final projects at Virtual Reality—Going Beyond, on Friday, June 23 from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Surrey campus.
Created with the popular game engine Unity3D and using Oculus Rift head-mounted displays, visitors can experience a wide range of virtual realities that activate both the senses and stimulate imagination.
The VR experiences can also invoke feelings of empathy, connection, inner turmoil, or awe.
This term, students’ unique themes including the following:
• experiencing life as a polar bear dealing with the aftermath of our own decisions affecting human global warming
• emotionally connecting with a child’s inner world by experiencing their dreams
• feeling the loneliness of an abandoned dog first-hand
• being able to ‘see’ sound by becoming a synaesthete
Others draw from contemporary indie/art computer games, such as Dear Ester, Journey, or Stanley’s Parable and cinema/TV/VR.
Students will be on site to demonstrate and explain their vision and inspiration for the projects. Projects will have a video feed available.
