Media Advisory: Semester in Alternate Realities—Virtual Reality Student Showcase Apr. 4

Simon Fraser University’s ground-breaking, interdisciplinary Semester in Alternate Realities brings together students from departments across SFU to create virtual reality experiences that address real-world problems such as climate change, mental health and the global refugee crisis.

Media are invited to attend the program’s Virtual Reality Student Showcase on Thursday, April 4 from 12-noon to 5:30 pm in SFU's Surrey campus Mezzanine. There will be opportunities to experience the immersive virtual reality projects that SFU students have created and interview students and course instructors, Bernhard Riecke and Patrick Pennefather.

This event is the third and final showcase in the Semester in Alternate Realities program. More information about the unique teaching environment of the course can be found here.

Fast facts:

• SFU’s Semester in Alternate Realities is the first program of its kind to bring together students from across the university for an intensive study of virtual reality technology and its applications.

• The interdisciplinary student teams are from the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), the School of Communication, and the School for the Contemporary Arts.

• The course’s unique experiential teaching methods allow the student teams to focus on their projects rather than competing for grades.

• From healthcare to theatrical experiences, the many possible applications of virtual reality technology are explored as these students focus on how to use the technology to create immersive, authentic experiences that make a difference.
