Students win first prize for "Gro-Cart" idea
May 27, 2016
Two urban studies students have won first prize in SFU Surrey's community engagement competition for their idea to use mobile vegetable-growing carts to increase food security.
Students Tammas Grogan and Kate Elliott came up with the idea of using grocery carts to create "Gro-Carts" to grow potatoes and salad vegetables. The plan is to make the Gro-Carts available to people in the Surrey Centre area who are low-income or otherwise lack access to nutritious food. Winning first prize means they now have $3,000 to further develop their idea. They will be leading workshops on how to use the portable gardens this spring and are looking for community partners.
Congratulations to Tammas and Kate!
