Whether you join us for one event or all, we hope that you will learn something new, find time to rest and connect, and have some fun with us!

Mental Health Dialogue with Dr. Scott Lear
12:00 - 12:50 pm

*Please note this event will be recorded

The pandemic has brought with it a toll on many people's mental health. Whether it's from the health concerns of the virus, financial insecurities or lost social connections, few have been unaffected. Often people suffer in silence, concerned with societal stigma about speaking up or seeking help. Sharing stories and bringing these challenges into the open can help reduce the stigma. In December 2020, Dr. Scott Lear was experiencing an especially dark period and would like to share his story, and how helpful it's been for him to open up.

Dr. Scott Lear is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and the inaugural Pfizer/Heart and Stroke Foundation Chair in Cardiovascular Prevention Research at St. Paul's Hospital.

Adding Gratitude to your Resilience Routine
1:30 - 2:00 pm

Gratitude can strengthen our ability to cope during difficult or uncertain times. Learn about how gratitude improves your mental health, and how to create space for cultivating gratitude alongside our continued advocacy or activism efforts.

Yuna Chen, (Acting) Associate Director, SFU Health Promotion, will lead a journaling exercise to help us understand how gratitude helps to cultivate mindfulness, disengage from negative thinking and support wellbeing.

Cook & Chat with Steve & Laurie
3:00 - 3:45 pm

Cook: 15 mins
Chat: 30 mins

*Please note this event will be recorded

Join Steve and Laurie as they make healthy lunches in this short cooking demonstration. This will be followed by a casual, interactive chat. Check out the recipes for Steve's Glory Bowl and Laurie's Summer Harvest Tortilla Soup and Spiced Toasted Pita Chips!

*A Message For Students Only: We would like this event to be as barrier free as possible! The Health Promotion team is offering support to students in need for the groceries highlighted in Cook & Chat. Please email Yuna Chen at yuna_chen@sfu.ca, by Thursday, March 18. We will ask for your contact information, including your SFU ID and SFU email. Grocery cards are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and we reserve the right to end registration if all grocery cards are allocated.

Past Wellness Days

SFU Vancouver hosted the first Wellness Day for staff and faculty in the Spring of 2020 at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. The full day of events included yoga, chair massages, nutrition and physio workshops, a healthy lunch, as well as a variety of information booths hosted by amazing internal and local vendors.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fall 2020 event was offered online, which allowed SFU Vancouver to open up the event to all SFU staff, faculty and students. We hope to reach an even greater number of staff, faculty and students for this third offering of Wellness Day and are proud to partner with SFU Surrey and SFU Health and Counselling Services.
