Results of the SOLE survey

August 05, 2020

Thank you, SFU students, for sharing your online learning experiences!

SFU’s goal is to continue to offer students the best learning experiences we can during the COVID-19 pandemic. We heard from more than 4800 undergraduates, and their responses will help our instructors and staff to reflect on and enhance remote teaching and learning at SFU.

Here are some of the things we heard:

  • Most students prefer a mix of synchronous and asynchronous course components.
  • They value instructor feedback on their work and would also value the opportunity to check in with instructors during the term about how this new way of teaching and learning is working.
  • Students told us that assignments, lectures, and learning resources like readings and websites support their learning.
  • Although there was some confusion about how to effectively participate in courses, students expressed gratitude for how instructors supported them during the pivot and through the summer term.

The SOLE survey results are available as both an infographic and a report.  An appendix includes analysis of open-ended responses.
