SFU’s Dr. Laurel Weldon has been appointed to the position of dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, beginning January 1, 2023.

Laurel is currently a professor in the department of Political Science. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada as well as an SFU Distinguished Professor. She received her undergraduate degree at SFU and returned from Purdue University to take on her current role in 2018. Previously, she held the position of Distinguished Professor at Purdue University, where she taught for 18 years, serving a term as interim vice-provost, Faculty Affairs, and establishing the Purdue Policy Research Institute, which catalyzed and coordinated research on global challenges. 

Dr. Peter V. Hall, who has been serving as dean pro tem since August 2021 while the search committee completed its work, will continue to serve until August 31, 2022. At that point, Dr. Lara Campbell will step in as dean pro tem until December 31, 2022.
