Course Grading Scheme

Students' final mark for this course will be calculated using the following course grading scheme:

  • 2% for the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) activity:
    • During our Week 7, we shall have an Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) workshop.
    • The workshop/activity/report will be worth 2%.
    • More info regarding this workshop will be provided closer to the time of the workshop.
  • 10% for weekly exercises:
    • There shall be about 13 weekly exercises this semester.
    • I shall consider the best 10 out of these 13 weekly exercises: 10 x 1% each for a total of 10%.
  • 10% for assignments:
    • There shall be 2 assignments this semester.
    • Each will be worth 5% for a total of 10%.
  • 78% for examinations:
    1. Strategy #1 for calculating "exam mark":
      • There shall be 2 midterms and 1 final examination this semester.
      • Midterm 1: Part 1 (Theory and Understanding) will be worth 8% and Part 2 (Coding) will be worth 10% for a total of 18%.
      • Midterm 2: Part 1 (Theory and Understanding) will be worth 10% and Part 2 (Coding) will be worth 15% for a total of 25%.
      • Final Examination: Part 1 (Theory and Understanding) will be worth 15% and Part 2 (Coding) will be worth 20% for a total of 35%.
    2. Strategy #2 for calculating "exam mark":
      • 78% for the final examination (and 0% for the midterm examinations)

  • NOTE: an "exam mark" will be calculated using Strategy #1 and an "exam mark" will be calculated using Strategy #2 for each student in this course and the best "exam mark" out of these two will be used as part of the calculation of each student's final mark for this course.

Students must attain an overall passing grade (50%) on the weighted average of exams (i.e., midterm and/or final examinations - depending on strategy used to produced best "exam mark") in the course in order to obtain a clear pass: a grade of C- or better.

Students must attain an overall passing grade (50%) on the final examination in order to obtain a course final letter grade of D or better.
