Rules

Linguistics 322-3

Syntax

The following are the general rules to D-structures converting them into S-structures:

The movement of constituents and the insertion of constituents.

  1. Lower T to the first available host. If T is in construction with an operator, the operator blocks lowering. There is on exception to this to be discussed later.
  2. Insert the dummy auxiliary verb do as a last resort.
  3. Move (raise) a phrase to which is adjoined a constituent bearing the strong operator [+Q].
  4.

Additional Phrase structure rules:

  1. T --> T + Neg (optional).
  2. T --> T[+Q} (optional).

Categorial changing rule:

  1. The head of a construction determines the category of that construction. Therefore, if V is adjoined to T, the node T dominating V + T following adjunction will be changed to V.
