Prompts
Make and defend a thesis that addressed one of the following
4 prompts:
1. Michael Ignatieff notes that rights have a “double-sided relationship
to democracy.” How should we balance democratic rule while protecting
the rights of minorities? Your thesis should provide a specific,
principled response to this question. In addressing the question,
it will useful to use concrete examples. For instance: should the
aboriginal First Nations people of Canada have completely unrestricted
self-determination, or should their own democratic rule be constrained
by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
2. To what extent should an employer’s right to make a profit be circumscribed by the state’s interest in protecting the moral equality of persons through anti-discrimination legislation? You may want to focus on the specific case of Abercrombie and Fitch: that is, should Abercrombie and Fitch be allowed to discriminate on the basis of appearance and/or race? In answering this, you must:
(i) Address what best grounds a person’s right to pursue profit (contractarian
or utilitarian)
(ii) Address what limitations are to be placed on the right to pursue
profit (Can one pursue profit by any means available?)
(iii) To what extent do those limitations entail an employee’s right
to non-discrimination? That is, show how the results of (i) and (ii) support
your thesis.
3. To what extent should a business’s right to make a profit be circumscribed by the state’s interest in pursuing a criminal investigation? You may want to focus on the specific case presented in class, where the decision options are as follows:
A. The television station has absolute right over the tape.
B. The station must give the police a copy, but need not wait
to air the footage.
C. The station must give the police a copy, and must wait for
a reasonable period of time (say 24 hours) to air the footage.
D. The station must wait until given permission by the police
force to air the footage.
Your thesis will be one of the above options (or some specific alternative
proposal). In defending your thesis you must:
(i) Address what best grounds a business’s right to pursue profit
(contractarian or utilitarian).
(ii) Address what limitations this places on the right to pursue profit.
(iii) Show how this supports your thesis.
Thesis Statement
Your essay must have a thesis statement. The thesis statement
must come at the top of your paper before your introductory paragraph.
So, the start of your paper will look like this:
Name
Tutorial leader; D1.0X
Title of Paper
Thesis statement: Based on Singer’s moral principle, the parents
of conjoined twins, Mary and Jodie, have a moral obligation to have the
twins surgically separated.
Now the paper begins with a very brief introductory paragraph followed by the body of the essay.
