Write on two (2) of the following prompts. Note: you must
choose prompts that differ sufficiently from your paper project; if you
have questions regarding this, you may email me (etiffany@sfu.ca).
1. To what extent does the film Memento support Kant's theory of personal identity? (note: you may not answer both 1 and 2)
2. To what extent does the film Memento support Kant's transcendental idealism (his view that space and time are given to us through sensory data but rather are categories by which we interpret that data). You may, but need not, limit your discussion to the cateogory of time. You may, but need not, discuss other movies we've watched as well as Memento. (note: you may not answer both 1 and 2)
3. Using the character of Lermontov and/or Boab and/or Brandon (at least one and up to all three) explain some aspect of Nietzsche's philosophy discussed in class (both lecture and assigned reading). (note: if you wote on Nietzsche for your paper project, you may still write on this topic, provided you discuss different character(s) in your essay here than you discussed in your paper).
4. Using Crimes and Misdemeanors, explain the existentialist-humanist response to the threat of nihilism.
5. Using Happy Together and/or Eyes Wide Shut, discuss Sartre's notion of being-for-others.
6. To what extent does The Matrix succeed at representing the Buddhist understanding of reality as discussed by Masao? (note: you may not answer both 6 and 7)
7. Reconstruct a Marxist reading of The Matrix. You may, but need not, criticize this reading. (note: you may not answer both 6 and 7)
