Analogue to digital convertor (ADC)

A device which transforms the continuous voltage of an analogue audio signal into a set of discrete values.

The rate of sampling or measurement is the sampling rate and corresponds to the limits of frequency resolution
(see Nyquist).
The amplitude resolution of the  measurement is given in bits where 1 bit = approximately 6 dB of dynamic range.

Current standard is sampling rate of 44,100 Hz with a resolution of 16 bits (96 dB dynamic range).
