Transfers & Rate Changes

Preamble: Film to video transfer
 
Device/Media Transfer to: Operation
Location recorder: 1/4" Nagra Magnetic film: if editing on a film editor then sprockets are now sync method Level match.  Pilot tone insures playback = record speed.  Sync position via slate.
Location recorder: DAT Magnetic film: as w/ Nagra but no need for Pilot tone. Level match.
Location recorder: 1/4" Nagra or DAT Non-linear editor (Pro Tools, Avid, etc.) Transfer to computer files.  0 dB transfers to -12 dB (level adjust).
Original film now transfered to video. Video runs .999 X speed of film. Long takes from DAT or Nagra need to be slowed to match new image speed. Pull down.
Video (various - analogue or digital formats) Non-linear editor (Pro Tools, Avid, etc.) Edited with off line video editor and original video tracks are used No rate change required.Level as w/ all digital recordings: 0 to -12 dB.
Edited film w/magnetic soundtrack Optical print Mix at a film mixing facility.  Mastered to digital or magnetic film. Master sent to facility to make negative optical film.  Film lab marries image and sound to create answer print.
Edited film w/ProTools, DA88 or time code DAT soundtrack Optical print Mix done to video.  mastered to digital. Completed soundtrack is pulled up to adjust for faster rate of finished film. Pulled up version is sent to optical facility.
Edited video video Completed sound track is "laid back" to master.
